Hi,
im creating a market-place website, a bit like etsy.com. regards payments, is paypal the best choice? the fees seem very excessive (around 4%) but i like the resolution management side of it - takes it out of my hands. Are there any alternatives though with cheaper fees?

I don't know of many services for external payments. But how about listing your items on Amazon and using your website to catalog your items? When someone wants to buy an item, a link will send them to the amazon web site.

You could also try processing and managing payments on your own site but that is more complicated and requires a lot of security.

Hi
I'll need to do the processing on my site. Security isn't an issue wuth Paypal actually as Paypal handles all that - once a user checkouts, they are directed to the paypal website which processes the payment, and then back to my site for confirmation. I was wondering about an alternative since paypals fee are pretty excessive at around 4% per transaction..

While there are cheaper alternatives, I don't know where you're getting 4%. I've been using paypal for a while and pay 2.9%+$0.30 per transactions. I've built several payments pro setup for some high earning clients who are getting 2.2%+$0.30/transactions because they have >$10000 in sales in a month.

Where do you see the 4% number?

Heres a link to paypal fees for website payments standard

I will have about 50 suppliers each selling on my site. Each supplier will have their own paypal account and i dont expect supliers to sell more than 2,500 euro's worth of goods per month - meaning they will be in the top bracket of fees. So thats 3.4% + 35 cent. The average on the site sells for about 20 euro. So with the fees above thats 3.4% + 1.75% (35cent) = 5.15%. So actually on average, each supplier will be paying 5.15% per transaction. It seems crazily expensive to me..

I think i was looking at the wrong product, it looks like i could also use "Express Checkout" to pay the suppliers. But still, the fees are high. For a transaction of 20 euro (the average transaction on my site), 88 cent goes to paypal, meaning a fee of 4.4% (2.9% + 30 cent)...it does seem very expensive to me..

Paypal is one of the biggest and most widely adopted forms of online payment on the web today. With the weight of Ebay behind it, PayPal has truly went from strength to strength, and is a well recognised web brand. That said, it hasn’t avoided negative press, with reports of accounts being frozen, and Paypal slow to respond to support queries, many people have been forced to review and compare other options. Whilst many of these don’t yet have the user base of PayPal, they may serve to help you out when searching for alternatives.

Thanks..

If you are looking for an alternative, you may check these two options:

1- http://home.plimus.com/ecommerce/
2- http://www.payoneer.com/
3- Money broker

These are alternative to paypal. You may check them and make a decision after reviewing your available options.

I don't know how much their fees are, but you could look into Western Union.
