Hello,
I have some friends who own a cafe here in Japan and after recently looking at their site (covered in Flash and last updated in 2007) I offered to make a new site for them. I don't want to use Flash at all, as one, I don't know how to use Flash, and two, I really want to apply a technology that's a little faster and capable of being used on mobile devices (the owner has an iPhone and an iPad).
Is jQuery a safe bet to keep that "flashiness" and "fun"?

Good call on ditching the Flash. If you're looking for a replacement, jQuery is as close to flashiness you can get without Flash. It won't be able to do everything Flash can but at least it will be compatible with all devices and perform better.

I would suggest two versions of the site. One for desktops and another for mobile visitors. For the mobile site you should check out jQTouch (http://www.jqtouch.com). Even the official jQuery team is working on a mobile version of the jQuery library.

I thought about that mobile site idea. Thanks for the suggestions about jQTouch. That looks AWESOME. They have a limited number of menus and sometimes you're waiting around to see whats on the list. It would be nice to just have it on your mobile.
