how do you create animated gifs?

Hi,
I have seen gif images that are simple animations. What program do you need to create these? Does Fireworks or Photoshop allow you to do this? All I want to actually do is make some text flash on and off

If you already have Photoshop, it also comes with ImageReady and that's where you can create animated Gifs, Image Maps, Rollovers etc.

You can also use Microsoft Gif animator. It's free and easy to use. I doubt it is the best animator out there, but for simple animations it works great.

there was a error with the windows thing, and i have photoshop business edition and there is no image ready. easy photo, but no image ready.

I would use image ready..
I mean you only have to do your thing in photoshop and switch ove to image ready when done.. it's super easy..

i think that i should probably just learn to use flash (which i have, so i REALLY should learn to use it) if i wanna make animations, but i kind of want to add a buddy icons section on mu site, and i have some good ideas but they rely on the icons being animated...
