Hello Guys,

One of the unfortunate hazards of being a webmaster (or any computer/internet related procession) is the lack of movement and activity while you actually work. This usually results in problems with your weight especially if you like eating and have a slow metabolism.

Unfortunately this has been the case for me for quite a while.

Since 2001, I have had huge weight swings going from 70 KG (155 LBS) to 120 KG (265 LBS) and then back to 80 KG (177 LBS) back in 2008 after 12 months of sports and fitness. Due to a few personal problems and lack of movement, I have gone back up to 105 KG (232 LBS) in May 2011 (loosing my fit body) however managed to drop back to 90 KG (198 LBS) in July after a strict diet.

Anyway, I added a section under my new webmaster blog called FAT TO FIT (or vice versa ) where I am going to share my experiences and pictures with my fellow webmasters in hopes that I can connect with my collegues who are having similar problems. Lets see if we can get some strength in numbers and manage to inspire webmasters around the world who are having weight problems.

Please feel free to share your experiences under this thread or under FAT TO FIT section of my blog.

Thanks in advance for all your comments.

Best Regards,

Note: I am aware that obesity does not mean being a fat ass and is actually a serious medical condition. I am just merely using a catchy line to attrack forumers attention. I do apologize in advance if it offends anyone.

Indeed. Ive noticed myself putting on weight before and had to basically start starving myself and exercise.

That's why I like jobs that get me away from the desk.

Dont be worried about offending fat arses. Maybe they should exercise more instead of complaining about their weight, saying it's their genes, while shovelling three big macs in their faces.

Well I guess I am an exception to overweight webmasters, I work a steady 9-5 at an interactive agency, freelance and run several business on the side, work out and run 3-5 days a week and still find time to have some fun on the weekend

I weigh about 190lbs, good amount of muscle, decent endurance, and pretty cut :D

Two things on my mind here.

First is it ok to call yourself a webmaster if you have at least one web site you control and maintain? I ask this because I consider myself an intermediate but have noticed many people use the term "webmaster" and it's usually the title of the person to contact for problems with the web site, which is a category I fit in. I have a friend who can barely make a basic website but he went and got one of those webmaster email addresses. I thought it was funny. Just picking on the way "master" implies expert knowledge of a subject.

Anyways, I've struggled with my weight all my life and it seems I have to go to extremes to loose it but by the time I loose a good bit of my fat I'm burned out and end up laying around and eating until I'm fat again. Technically I'm obese but I do not have a disease. I just can't stay motivated and feel sluggish all the time so I sit in front of a computer or a TV when it's not a computer. And then I get bored and stuff my face while sitting there. I am to blame for my 270lbs of weight because if it's not exiting, I just can't seem to get motivated. I don't see that as a disease but more of a mental block and laziness.

I've been thinking I should set up my work station so that I have to stand instead of sitting and think about adopting practices like those guys I see in techy movies, moving around a lot like crack monkeys. Making everything I can wireless, and put that chair in the corner out of the way and then try to just get hyped up when I'm working on the computer and move around. Maybe getting out of the house and going to some of the local computer/developer conventions so it keeps my interest and walking from booth to booth doesn't feel like exercise, but fun.

After 16 years sitting on my ass doing web work, I have been fortunate enough to stay pretty healthy with my weight ; 165 -175lbs.

However, weight is not my concern with my job. It is the neck, back and spine. As posture deteriorates, due to being a certain position for extended periods of time, you can develop

neck pain
muscle cramps
sciatic nerve issues
stomach problems
eye problems

I am currently battling sciatica from sitting so much. I regularly get up every hour and walk for 5 minutes - regardless of the dirty looks I get from co-workers for doing so.

Last year, I was getting severe dry eyes and started developing some floaters in my right eye. Had an eye exam, was prescribe Systane eye drops (over the counter)

I went through a few months a couple years back where I essentially had GERD and developed acid reflux. I ended up on Prilosec and Aciphex with doses of Mylanta quite often.

All programmers and developers, we need to get up of our asses more often. I NEVER had any of these health issues until my level of daily exercise dropped near zero.

Our jobs are extremely unhealthy for our bodies. Make that time to take care of your health or your body will start hating you.
