I'm fairly new to doing development for clients and charging, so am working through the business side of that. The thing I'm running up against is that I gave someone an extremely cheap quote ($80) to do a pretty in-depth site because I'm still wanting to build a portfolio. I told her that she would need to provide content and explained what content is. Now I keep getting "go get this picture off this website, and this content here and you should be able to find this online." I've tried explaining that you can't directly copy others' content and pictures, but she's not grasping it. Today she says, "I think it needs more wording on the front page, talk about __________." What?! Oh, and she wants a glittery graphic text like you see on MySpace for her logo. *sigh* That's a whole other thing.

Anyway, how do you explain these kinds of things (maybe I'm not being clear) or avoid them altogether. (And will you do anything the client asks as far as design and development, even if you know it's going to look bad or put off clients for them if they insist...she's also wanting an all black website. LOL)

Thanks guys!

I have been in that position SO many times, you come up with an awesome design and the client defaces it. The thing is, we're the professionals. Example of a client thinking his website is amazing: www.thebusinessengineers.co.uk - ITS SHOCKING - AND WTF HAS COWS GOT TO DO WITH BUSINESS PLANS? We made an awesome layout and design, and he rejected it.

Solution: Don't waste your time with clients like this, it's company policy now to take clients through an 'eligible' stage to see if they're actually worth working with.

I know they say if they want a black website, you give them a black website, but do it with style, provide an awesome design and good customer service, and DONT be hesitant to say your opinion. I've told many of my clients that their ideas are ****. Not quite in that context, but at the end of the day, it's going to be work that's good enough to go on your portfolio, or it's going to be so bad, it's not.

Make sure everything is clear when doing work, sure quoting an amount for something is what you've quoted for, but don't f yourself in the a. Be careful and know what the workload is before giving a figure.

Here's part of our terms: At no extra cost, 24 hour support is available to clients via email or phone for any issues regarding false information or updated content. Our support team will not be inclined to update the client’s web site when they please; it is simply for updating information, content or correcting errors.
