apache will not start

I have installed apache several times and cannot get it to start. My netstat does not show anything on port 80 and I do not have any kind of error log for apache. Any thoughts on what to look for

Apache comes with a default error log in it's root folder in logs/, how come yours does not?

What system are you running it on?
