domain name for seo

Hello,
I want to open a forum site about a certain subject. Of course the site name xxxxxxxxxxxforum.com or xxxxxxxxxxxxforums.com is already taken.

However, is it still good if I buy a domain name with the first word a little abbreviated and then forum.com? does it still help?

lets say the first word is 11 letter long. does it still help for seo if I buy a name first word 8 letter long (last 3 letters thrown out, first 8 letters exactly the same) and then forum.com?

so instead of

abcdefghijk.com

i buy the name

abcdefgh.com

is this still good enough for seo?

monkeysforsale.com is 'good enough for SEO' whether you forum is about monkeys or not. As always "content is king". Keep you forum threads indexable and get some good, high quality content on there (keywords help in the content) and the domain will be only a very minor (virtually insignificant) part of your ranking.

Please don't let "SEO experts" tell you otherwise. The only SEO expert tactic anybody every really needs is high quality, continuously updated content. If you've got that, the backlinks will take care of themselves.

Yeps, these are the two most important factors in SEO, but you can still exploit these advantages tremendously. You can get the exact same website even higher in the rankings using more than just those two SEO techniques (and that is the essence of SEO, right ;) )
