Hi,
I'm developing a site that is using a CNAME (Canonical Name) and this is the name, obviously the client want the search engine to index. Unfortunately, Google has already begun indexing the site via it's uh,...literal URL, and not the CNAME url.

Can anyone recommend what to do in this situation? I can't use No index, No Follow because the page code is one and the same for both sites.

Does Google view both URL's as completely different entitites?

Hi,

Can you be a little more specific?

Do you mean: yourdomain.com is being indexed instead of www.yourdomain.com ?

If that is the case, Google does look at this as two different entities ;-)

No, I should be more clear.

mysite.bigcartel.com - (hosted on BigCartel.com)

is being indexed, instead of www.mysite.com

Since the page code is one and the same,...? How do I tell the SE not to index the non-canoncial name.

thanks for your help

Well, it is one or the other ...

If you have two different versions of your website, both versions will be indexed. If you don't want mysite.bigcartel.com to be indexed, you should use a 301 redirect from that website to your site, but I think this is not possible on a third party website.

Therefore you should remove mysite.bigcartel.com, so Google will come index your website. If you have duplicate content on your website, use a canonical meta tag, or a 301 redirect.

Success!

Christophe

I agree with the Suggestion given by christophe27. I also suggest to use canonical meta tag.
