I am currently hosting my own small website through my Macbook at home. I am starting the process of changing my domain name. I was wondering the process of doing this.

I already did some searching on this topic and found that the general rule of thumb is to copy your current site to a new hosting account under the new name then create a .htaccess file and place it in the root of my old domain site which will redirect all traffic to my new domain. This seems simple enough, but I see a snag I will run into because I am hosting it myself on my Macbook.

The snag would be that I wouldn't be opening a new hosting account, but rather replacing the current site on my computer (well not really replacing the site, but replacing the domain name linked to this site). I would "direct" my NEW domain name (via my DYNDns account) to my computer (unlinking my old domain name), and essentially not host my old domain name anymore. Because of this I wouldn't be able to add a .htaccess file to my old domain.

Is there any way around this or any different way to redirect traffic from one site to another with my hosting setup?

You should use "301 redirect" to old website to new one. it will diver all traffic and seo values too
