Athlon XP 2000
512MB DDR333 Memory
80GB 7200RPM
128MB GeForce 4200ti Graphics
Gigabyte mobo

Abyss Web Server (Thanks to Pyro)
PHP 4

With ofcourse IE5.5 (If it'll work on that it'll work on anything!), Moz 1.1, Moz 1.4, Opera 7.1, Netscape 7, Netscape Communicator 4, etc.

But I do occasionally use my old P3 800 with 512 MB PC133 Ram, a 20GB hard drive and a 64MB ATI Radeon 7000.

RAM is probably the most important for graphics and web design I'd say.

I run a
proc: p4 2.6 ghz, w/ 800mhz fsb 512 cache ht
ram:512 ddr pc-3200
mobo:msi neo on a sis chipset
hd:80 gig wd
lighting:dual vantec blue cold cathods (vantec nexus 3.5'' control pannel)
os:xp pro
vga: I currently have a geforce-4 ti-4200 w/ 128, but I want a radion 9700 - 9800 pro (nvidia handles directx 9 like crap)
server:iis 5.1
browsers: firebird (my fav), mozilla reg, ns, opera, ie6, ie5.5, ie5, lynx. If I had a digital campera I would take a picture of my comp because I think it looks nice. My cathods can be set to sound reactive, it looks real sweet when I am blaring the van halen. :D

I appreciate the input - I was on the fence as to getting the Dell or the Mac. Looks like I'll be going with the Dell:

Precision 650
Dual 3.06 Xeon
2GB RAM
2x 36gb 15k Drives
DVDRW
Wildcat Video Card
Duel 19" Flat Panels

I'll put up a pic in a bout a week or so when it comes in. This should keep me happy for a couple of years...

I just want something that will retire as a decent server in a few years...

I don't make enough to buy the cheap stuff, especially when a significant portion of my livelyhood depends on it.

That depends upon what type of server you mean because Apache certainly does need all that.

build the comp urself. You will learn, get a better price and you will know what you are getting.

I have built PC's in the past - even built a cluster last year.

It is not worth the time and effort to do - my time is very stretched as it is, it would be more expensive for me to build one at this point...

Built this beauty myself recently:

Athlon 64 3200+ processor
K8V Deluxe motherboard
2x512 MB DDR400-RAM
Radeon 9800 XT (yay! HL 2 is mine!) graphics card
160 GB 7200 RPM hard drive
Audigy 2 ZS sound card

The price was a b-i-t-c-h, but it's proven to be worth it...

Both for me,

Mac G4 Powerbook and G5 tower for all my real work, and a Dell WinTel system for testing in the PC world. It works out well. The G5 system is the most powerful system in my office, the laptop is great for being portable and still working on design, video editing, burning DVD's, etc. Mac OSX has a built in Apache server with PHP for learning my server side stuff without any need to install any software, and when I take my ASP course in school I have the Dell for that.

And, best of all, I only have to have Windows on 1 out of my 3 machines!

:D

Mikejr,

I have used almost the same system you are looking at getting from Dell (the Dual 3.06 Xeon)... it rocked!
