Another question regarding incorporating Javascript......please read.......

Ok, here is my dilema. I have designed a logo, background image, etc. graphic in Macromedia Fireworks which I plan to use as a lay-out for my homepage.
I have transferred this to Dreamweaver. Now, I would like to know how I can add a javascript menu (in this case a button) to my layout? How exactly is this down?
Do I insert something? Do I write a specific script for use as a code? (I know how to enter and edit Javascript into HTML, but I do not know how it is placed into other HTML
documents/designs.) My main problem is, I would like to know how a javascripted item, whatever it may be, can be combined with an image or another design
and all fit together. I am hoping one of you experts can assist me.

I would like to place a simple javascripted menu "button that pops open upon clicking it" over an image made in Fireworks which serves as my background for my web-page.

Essentially, just putting one layer on top of over without ruining anything.
