I am having a couple of problems with a WIN98SE installation. First how do I stop the popup that ask for use username and password to proceed? Only one person uses this PC. I have stopped it before on other installations, but I do not recall how I did it.
Second when logging onto the internet the connect box does not offer to save my password. The box to check is there but is shaded gray. Is there some way I correct that? – oldtimer777

Thanks for the quick responses....

I remember that getting rid of the popup for username and password when opening windows was simple to dispose of but I just remember how it was done. Getting old I guess?????

As for connecting to the internet, I filled in the username and password but the "save password" was still shaded and not usable?????

I stopped working on PC several years ago but a neighbor asked me to correct some problems he was having with his PC and these are the only two that have me hung up.

Thanks again, oldtimer777

for that windows password, if I remember correctly...

right click network places, then properties, then remove 'client for microsoft networks...'

you will need to reboot and the password prompt will be gone.

The only choices I have under "Primary Network Logon" are "Client for Microsoft Network" and "Windows Logon". I can not remove either one. All I can do is switch from one to the other but I have tried that and the password window keeps popping up??????? A friend os mine showed me how to do it a few years ago and it was really quick and simple but I can not ask him now because he died last summer.

Search for *.pwl. You may find more than one. The one with the user's name at the beginning is what you want. Delete it. On reboot, you may get the window to input the name & password. Input name but no password. That should do it.

You see there has never been a password entered into the window. Usually when I install win98se and the window pops up the first time I just hit "enter" and it never came back but this time I cannot seem to get it to go away. - oldtimer777

I think there has to be. Unhide system files, etc. & try again.

I just re-read your original post. Are you installing Windows on a blank drive? Doesn't sound like it, since you can search for files, etc. But I don't remember ever getting asked for username & password when doing a reinstall.

Re: remember password field grayed out. Remove/reload dialup networking. Make sure TCP/IP is reloaded when you put DUN back in.

Yes I installed win98se on on a freshly formatted HD and the first time you boot it always ask for logon username and password. Usually I just leave it blank and click enter and it never comes back but this time it just keeps coming back????? - oldtimer777

You have to input a username. Leave the password blank. Also, is this machine networked? If so, I believe there is no way around the login window - no Windows user logged in, no way to log in to network.

If that doesn't do it, you can try using "Windows Family Logon" in network properties, but you'll still have to locate & delete the .pwl file. Then input a username the first time it asks, but no password. If you've got it right, it will tell you right there that if you don't put in a password, it won't ask again.

No, the PC is not on a network. It is a single user PC and I have the single user box checked. I tried deleting the .pwl and rebooting and it does not seem to work for me, I have not changed "Windows Family Logon" in network properties but if I remember correctly it was not one of my chioces. Can it be added? I will give that a try. THANKS - oldtimer777

When I go to “Primary Network Logon” on my other PC’s I choice of “Windows Logon” or “Microsoft Family Logon” but on this particular PC the only choices I have are “Windows Logon” or “Client for Microsoft Networks”. “Microsoft Family Logon” is not a choice????? – oldtimer777

You can probably add it.
Right-click Network Neighborhood & go to Properties.
On Configuration tab, click Add.
Choose Client, then click Add.
Choose Microsoft. It should be there.
