can someone help me with getting started. It seems I should be using css for my site. but after looking at the sample and the help I am lost.
All I want is one page with a back ground and cutom buttons on the left. I have tried to copy some sample code for back ground. in front page I dont see any thing in the preview

You tried to just copy code into a wysiwyg editor without actually learning how to use it. I say #1 ditch front page and learn to code html by hand (I am assumeing you are using the wysiwyg features) and #2 buy a book on css. www.w3schools.com has some good css tutorials. www.bluerobot.com has some good rudimentary css layouts. I would look for books by Jeffrey Zeldman, he seems to know what hes doing.

I'm willing to say Zeldman knows a lot about web design, but in terms of CSS, Meyer kicks his butt. He even admitted as much in "Designing with Web Standards." Zeldman's site isn't exactly one I would link to as a site to show off a beautiful CSS based design either. It's nice, but I've seen plenty "cooler" looking ones.
