Ok, so last night about 8pm i was working on dreamweaver when it crashed. no big deal i had to re-strat my computer but when it loaded back up i have a security pop-up really fast, so fast i could not see it then a message from windows about a failed registry entry.
i started to look for the pop-up message but could not find it... like it had been deleted.... odd

then about 11pm my Dad was using the computer when all the programs he was running stopped working only you could not ever shut the computer down with the power button... WTF is that.
then all the icons in the bottom right of windows started to be closed. so my screen does not work but something is going on... then a little yellow icon come into the bottom right... then a security message came up again and jumped of just as quick. this was funny as i thought the computer had crashed. so my dad turned off the computer by the power. turned it back on and.... nothing.... windows had been set back to default and all my files, software, music EVERYTHING was gone. nothing.
so i go to sysytem restore. becuase even if you set it to defualt you can still restore... but nothing... it was like it just came from the factory. now the only way to do that is with the recovery disk i have. no one else could have it. now i have nothing on my computer and i have lost over 3 years work... some of that is backed up but most is not... i also lost about $1000 worth of software i have downloaded and bought serials for like dreamweaver. i can still get this but i have to phone them up now.
someone please tell me WTF happened. how can i just lose windows like that. was i hacked. this is ball****. i am gutted. i lost 7 web sites, 4 one them i don't have now as they were set for the future. i have lost all my music from iTunes. this is ball****. why would someone do this.

anyone got any ideas?

It almost sounds like a virus.

Almost..

But i actually dont think it was. It sounds more like a bunch of corrupted system files and reg keys.

The problem may well have started from some peeping spyware or a worm of some description, however.

how can i just lose windows like that. Well that's really more a question for BillG or Monkeyboy but I doubt they read this forum.

As mentioned above, this could be malicious code or it could just be bad code running on an insecure OS but the result's the same. Sorry you lost so much data but that's really what backups are supposed to hedge against. The companies you got electronic software from should be able to give you your reg keys if they are reputable.

I do feel your pain. I had a Frontpage installer blow away my primary NT partition on a box once. Luckily I had a linux distro on another partition so I could boot into linux and save my work off the primary NTFS.

UPDATE!
----------

Ok i found the many problems. one was my new floppy disk drive was making windows run funny. i removed that.

but the best one is i have versions E F and G of the MS Blaster worm. kinda funny becuase i don't download EXE files unless i know what there are. i don't download freeware. and the best is i downloaded the MS patch for this the day it came out. i have Norton 2004 running and do live updates every day. and it was only when i installed the 2003 version did it find them. It was in a program called MSLaugh.exe in my stsyem 32 folder. this is the best part... i can not delete it, i am being banned from my own computer.

I also had a virus called Welchi.B. and i think this is what someone used to gain access to my computer.

I have reformated my hard disk 3 times and even put a new version of windows on it. and it is still there. so i am going to buy a new hard disk.

thanks for you replys.:(

w32klez, msblast, and some of the other imfamous viruses can be spread through other files that are not an exe. Infact any email attachment can carry it. Norton is not going to do crap for you when you get the new virus on the block, but you can download fixes for the virus from www.symantec.com , the maker of norton. Reformatting your hard drive clears it completly, it will remove a virus. If you have reformatted and still get problems then you most likely do not have a virus. It could always be a hardware falior, I have had some bizzare things happen when hardware dies. When a hard drive dies its never fun, but I can generally spot that right away when I boot from windows pe or knoppix (these are both mico os's that can run from cd). I have had a stick of ram with a 2.0 cas latency in slot 2 and a stick with 2.5 in slot one and had horrible problems with that, took me a while to figure it out. Also you could have some nasty bios settings. If you played with bios go back and default your settings. Oh yea, I have had times where I thought I was going to loose my work too, last time was when our other hd was dieing. Apparently it was not completly lost, I was able to boot from a cd and move files over the network, but that hard drive could not be salvaged.

Furthermore, small files like the ones stated above can be installed on your system when you download a HTML page. VBScript is the perfect tool for writing web viruses.

Noone is safe on the web.

Worms don't require user intervention to spread, just user inaction. 8-)
