I am designing a new site for a friend and would like to include a Forum but have no experience with them other than posting on them.

Please could you recommend a free forum generator. The site will be a non profit site just for somewhere for friends to chat.

Any help is much appreciated.

First thing you need to find out is what server side scripting language is supported by your host.
There are plenty of free forum software available.

To make a good recommendation, we'll need a little more information about the hosting environment, ie. does the host support PHP, ASP, or???

Not sure about that. Emailed them, waiting reply. Im using www.pipex.co.uk if you can find anything on there that will answer your question?

The company offers both Unix and Windows NT servers..

The Unix server supports PHP, Perl, CGI.
The Windows server has support for ASP, Perl, CGI.

Find out whether you are being hosted on Unix or Windows and then choose the correct forum software.
If you can find a free forum written in Perl then you will be OK either way;)

But doesn't phpBB require a database? I believe it uses MySQL, so that might not be an option.
