I'm creating a site for a client who wants to be able to a)manage a photo library on the site by himself, and b)have a section of the site password protected.

I'm not a programmer and don't know how to set up this kind of thing myself, but I know there are hosts that have these kinds of things all set up and you just plug in your own content.

The only one I'm really familiar with, though, is Bravenet.com, and I'm a little wary of that for two reasons: 1)even if you pay them, their advertising still appears on your page, and 2) I don't know whether or not they're a financially stable company that won't disappear a few months from now.

Can anyone suggest other hosting companies that provide the services I mentioned, are likely to still be here a year from now, and won't put any kind of advertising on the photo library -- or any other -- page?

It's not a matter if the host will let you or not... it's a matter of will you allow your client to do this by either getting the software that makes it easy or do you teach them how to do it on their own.

The list I would refer you to is one provided by the site owners here http://webhost.thelist.com/

From the sounds of it you are going to have to looked for a boxed solution for Content Management. PHPNuke maybe a solution.

Thanks -- well, I looked at phpnuke.org, but found it a bit overwhelming. Didn't seem to be any newbie help that I could find. Do you know of any phpnuke newbie help online?

I know my webhost has it as an auto-install if you want it.

The site is www.site5.com

Then all you have to do is configure it.

When PHP-Nuke's Readme file says you need "A Linux Box installed and working properly", does this mean I would need to access it from a PC running Linux? Or is this something on the server side of things?

They are refering to the webserver, and I don't really belive that Linux is required. Both MySQL and PHP is available on Windows too, but the readme might not cover that.
