its their forum, so their announcements would not be spam. But what you are doing is, if you just post colorful product plug messages. See the ads at the top and bottom, who do you think puts them there? Jupitermedia. They own this forum, they pay the costs of bandwidth and and payed the vbulletin bill so they need something to cover their overhead. I think they are entitled to some plugs.

That is an announcement which will be displayed on the site from time to time, its not spam. Spamming the forums in a blatent misuse and will result in permanent banning.

yes back in the days when people still used dial up there was something called msn, and when I had a msn email I always got some pretty enticing offers on viagra. It was very tempting there...

<sigh/>i use it at home, but here at school we've got something along the lines of a T6:confused: line, which is supposed to be really super-duper fast. thank god i'm going to college next year, away from that blasted dial-up...

Wow I can have bigger breasts, I never knew that I should suspect it does encourage some people to spam though. As for this forums' adverts our proxy servers halts them before they get to me.

T-6 that's a new one on me I am on T-1 right now I suspect you are on similar, and in colleges they tend to have better security.

there is no such thing as a t6 to the best of my knowledge. Highest is t3. However, t3 is not the fastest internet, you have fiber optic connections
http://webopedia.internet.com/TERM/O/OC.html
13.21 Gbps on an oc255 wich is the fastest I have seen.

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/T/T_3_carrier.html
this is what most colledge campuses use. Most high schools and businesses are on full or fractional t1s.
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/T/T_1_carrier.html
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/F/fractional_T_1.html
I love webopedia... You can find any term there!

You were downloading and installing stuff at school? If I did that in our school I'd get kicked off the comps forever.

yeah, well we're building a new school, and hence we talked the district into getting us a new IT lab with real computers. so i spend most of my free time up there. the IT teacher is my advisor, so she doesn't really care what i do as long as i don't crash the system or download porn. she even knows about the underground website.
we also have a "computer" lab that i try to avoid at all costs, as the computer ladies that infest this alleged lab are, to put it nicely, satan's minions. they don't really let us do a whole lot of anything that isn't DIRECTLY skool related.

Our school has 3 labs, all of which sound like the latter of the 2 kinds you described. Hell, they have every single site blocked that isn't education related. Them teachers are a piece of work, I tell ya!

there are ways to get around that. the other guy that does the underground with me once timed himself at 5.9 seconds to get around our filter. and plus, it's SO effective, that some sites you can't get in if you type www.page.com, but you can with simply page.com or the other way around.

you need to find the right ones. that's why i'm gonna be a teacher - so kids won't completely hate school. there need to be more cool teachers!

Yeah, first, I would type in, for example, "miniclip.com", then they blocked it. After that, I would simply use "http://www.miniclip.com/Homepage.htm", then they blocked that. After that, I developed a simpl service hosted off of my server that included an iframe to browse sites, except they eventually blocked out my site, too:(

those bastards!
have you tried using Altavista to translate a page? i believe what you do is translate the page into some obscure language, then back, and the filter gets all sorts of confused. it's something like that. if you want, i can ask the people that use that tomorrow.

But if it was just translated, the URL wouldn't change. The filter our school uses blocks the URL, not the page content.

I believe it's called Novell.

-Dan I found a way around our nework security, by using a proxy with ssl. Its not a content filter, I am not exactly sure how it works, I guess it has certain servers blacklisted and sites blacklisted, or it only allows some through. I was going to make an asp.net web browser which would take a url, get the html content, and then populate it into a bottom frame, but in the process it would end up breakind every link and image. I could go around the image problem by dynamically saving all of those images to my server which would be a pain to script, I could fix the links by putting the regular url before /link.html but then if they have ../ or just a name it creates all of these different strings I have to replace for and it would be a lot of banging my head on the desk trying to envision how it will work as I script it. So I ditched the idea.

Yes Novell Clients have very good security features this is a Novell Workstation I am on now. Although there are several spoof servers and proxy servers added just to makes sure extensions like: *.jar, *.exe or *.zip cannot be downloaded either via HTTP or FTP clients.

we use websense. it's rather trashy, blocking all sorts of stupid, actually educational sites. but who would want to use those?
