Just curious as to where and how I can get some information on how to design pages that incorporate shoppig cart software so that customers can purchase products online.

its not something for the novice developer that is for sure. If you are designing it all your self, the checkout portions, you are going to need to have air tight code and some 128bit encryption (some nice string https:// ssl is what I mean by that). Otherwise your credit card numbers will be moving over the internet in plain text, asking to be stolen. You could also just use paypal for the checkout parts of your site, though most users will find this a pain in the butt.
