I am making a site for 1024x768 resolution or higher only and i was wondering if there is a way I can make a popup window or message that warns people ONLY with lower resolution that they need to change their resolution before they can view the site properly. thanks for the help

<script type="text/javascript">
if(screen.width < 1024 && screen.height < 768)
{ alert("Warning:\n\tIt may be difficult to view this site because of your screen resolution. Please increase it to view this site properly.");
}
</script>

not only does the fact that this huge page at 1024x768 cut out much of your internet traffic, but the js alert won't reach another 13% of internet users, which puts you down (if lavalamp's 75% statement is correct) to a little over 21% of your internet audience. 4 out of 5 can't be wrong if they haven't seen your site...

It seems that our stats are a little outdated, here are some new ones:

Resolution (http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2004/April/res.php)
JavaScript (http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2004/April/javas.php)

I make that 55% with resolution 1024x768 and greater, and 4% with JavaScript disabled. So maybe your audience isn't as small as first suggested, 55% can see your site outright, and of the 45% remaining only 96% of them will be told that they can't view your site.

That's still quite bad, to instantly cut loose 45% of the web. By simply converting your site to 800x600 and above you can increase your site audience to 97.2% of the web (going off the actual numbers rather than the rounded %age's).

Man I hate statistics. :D

well actually the person im making the site for requested it. they want it for a certain audience of which probably 95% have 1024 resolution or higher. There are alot of large images they wanted on the site and such. so they want it optimized for that resolution. it isnt like 800x600 wont be able to view it at all. thanks for your concern and the code however.

what? people around here have been waving around that 13% stat like it was the bill of rights?!?!?!?!?! i foresee that that is going to cause a revolt...or at least some more arguing.

It just means that there is more JavaScript support, not that we should ignore those who do not have it. It may be 4%, but that's still a heck of a lot of people...
