i was wondering what the best free image editing software around might be. i was able to take a scanned id card and make one for myself (here (http://undergroundwriting.netfirms.com/idcars.html)) using paint, but it still sucks. can anybody point me in a better direction?

the gimp is probably the best of all the free image editors out there (http://gimp.org)
windows installer here (http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/)
have fun
read the FAQ on the windows installer site. And remember to Install GTK before the GIMP.
:)
On my Windows ME computer, the GIMP is very, very buggy, and very sensetive; but it's a very powerful program nevertheless.

If you can afford it, get a new system, we don't want people to begin thinking that Windows ME is a good operating system! :p
Actually, I think this computer has just had its days, plus the operating system isn't too kind to the hardware -- it's about four years old with a 500MHz Intel Celeron processor, but it's got about 316 MB of RAM... So much for this Compaq laptop! Time for a new one!

gimp 2.01 runs GREAT on my xp system. The old version of the gimp (1.2.5) was very buggy though.

Hey, I resemble that remark! :p
My next computer will have to be a Compaq or Alienware... I prefer Compaq, this has been an excellent computer; it's just the operating system that's my problem -- nothing's compatible with it. Plus, before it got into my hands, it was pushed to its limit and constantly had problems. I've maintained the computer so it works better than it did when I got it. My dad has a Dell - Dell has excellent technical support, but they put his computer together wrong. To use a CD you have to put it in, take it out, and put it in again for it to work; plus the computer is slower than mine on a lot of programs (takes longer to load Internet Explorer than on my computer, and I use that rarely whereas he always uses it), and it shouldn't be since I have a 500MHz Celeron and he has a 2.4GHz Pentium 4... Maybe he just doesn't take care of his computer right... But in any case, one thing I definitely will not get is a Hewlett-Packard. Every computer that was HP was not worth purchasing - I have a Windows 3.1 that runs better!

compaq is crap
alienware is overpriced

HP bought Compaq
if you are going to get a manufactured computer get a dell
i'd prefer buying all the parts and putting it together myself though
This Compaq has lasted for four years; and it's been great. Only recently has it begun to run down, and become incompatible with just about any program I try to download these days... I know HP bought Compaq, but there's still a difference between the computers, at least in my experience.
My dad has a Dell with a Pentium 4 processor at 2.4GHz, and guess what. It runs more slowly than mine! Now that I think about it, though, he probably just doesn't take care of it right; he rarely shuts it off or does maintenance on it... But they manufactured the thing totally wrong - the CD drive on it won't work right. You have to put the disc in, take it out, and put it in again, before it recognizes that a disc was even put in! I think I might go with Dell, but if I have any problems like that, I'm gonna tell 'em to replace the whole computer. I'm not going to go through stupid stuff like that. I only hope I don't end up on the phone with some Indian that can't speak English! (No offense, it's hard to understand anything over the phone, but I tried calling Linksys once, and I couldn't understand the guy for anything!)
