Goddamnit Phill, you're getting worse than me with the smileys! I don't like it when you're in a good mood, it means I haven't done my job well enough. Lay off the caffeine and listen to some crappy music, like Slipknot, or N'Sync. That'll get you plenty depressed. ;)

For the record, Final Fantasy X-2 sucked. I only played for a few minutes, but there wasn't enough black mages in those few minutes. Black mages are to characters what cream soda is to drinks. Also, Ulta, please stop discrediting FF with your bad avatars... be like me. Get a puppy avatar. Noone can make fun of a puppy (until it pisses on the rug).

It's Not supposed to be a dog- I was just naming a random animal. It was originally intended to be a rabbit, but it turned out more like a cross between a rabbit and a koala. A single image can't credit FF, but I liked my old Vivi avatar, because Vivi's awesomeness could be understood by looking at him, whereas Sephiroth looks... yeah, until you've played FFVII.

Ben Rogers

WTF? I've only played 7-10, and 9 pwns. Out of every game I've ever played, it pwns. MGS2 was great, SSX3 is great, MOH: whichever one I played was great, and they're all classics, yes, but FFIX pwn'd all.

Actually, at the moment there is no reason to close it. I only close threads that break the rules or threads that are so pointless that it should be against the rules. :p

So far this thread has surprisingly stayed on topic. There have been points when it has gone off into la-la land but it always manages to come back. This thread is a nice net for all the announcements of avatar changes. Just as "The Thread" was a good net for all the extra stuff. The only reason it was closed is because it started to get too out of hand for even that purpose.

And here we go. Since this took me a while, this will be my avatar for a bit. It was rather simple, but my lack of knowledge as to using flash (I made 2 screen grabs, modded them, then made 5 images of the yeti from on-foot to top-of-jump, saved them each seperately, made copies so it ended up being 11 seperate .gifs, imported them all in sequence, and then dragged them into their correct position) made it more of a challenge than it had to be. What do you think?

I remember Ski Free. Good old Windows 3.1! I remember being totally unwilling to update the OS on my computer so I completely missed having Windows 95. But Daria freakin' rocks. She's my idol. Now, what's this "expose" on furries?

Mr Initial Man
03-10-2005, 01:46 AM
Some time ago, MTV did a show on Furries, and what they did to get their "info" was they dug up the biggest freak in the fandom they could find. I'm seen as passing strange in some quarters, and even a bit odd as furries go, but this guy was a complete nutcase. Overjoyed by all the attention, he became as sensational tabloid reporter, and MTV was just as sensational as he was.

There was quite a tiff over it, when it came out. It's still mentioned in the fandom.

Looks like a good time to jump in about my avatar. Name comes from Wamba, the court jester in Ivanhoe. Named a D&D character after him. We had several different groups playing in different games, but with similar characters. Several of us ended up adding "oid" to our characters names since they were similar to older characters. I keep meaning to look for a better picture, but haven't yet.

oh that's so sad that you've never been to a concert. Actually, I went to my first just a few months ago. It was...MXPX and the Presidents. I love the presidents. Man, I was so angry that Green Day's not coming anywhere even CLOSE to me. According to the GDA (http://greendayauthority.com) it looks like they're only going to be out east, at least any time soon. But seriously. Ben, I don't know what kind of music you're really into, but American Idiot is just...well, let's put it this way. I listen to it about five or six times a day. In fact, it rarely if ever leaves my CD player. I'm listening to it right now. YAY! And if you think "hlv" sounds like an std stop calling me that! Hooloovoo is an intelligent shade of the color blue. Wow this is a long post. At least for me. Tee hee. Get me talking about American Idiot and I seriously won't shut up. It's like a...novel, only each chapter is a song. OK I'll stop now.

I need to go to more concerts. Last one I went to was Modest Mouse at Radio City. I might wind up going to the U2 concert later on, though I'm pretty much 'meh' about them. Audioslave and Foo Fighters (both rawk) have new albums coming out, which usually means tours! In terms of dream concerts, that'd be if Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd did reunion tours. Those concerts would rock.

"Hooloovoo" takes too long to type, so bah to that idea. Green Day is something I could like, but just don't. They're not bad, but... eh. Lately I've been listening to Aphex Twin, Black Sabbath, A Perfect Circle, Soundgarden, and Iron Maiden... but that's mainly because I have a 5 CD disc changer. ;) If their songs have meaning, or originality, or just pure quality, then I'll probably like it. I tend to stick to techno, and rock, though... hip-hop, rap, country, classical, and trance are all pretty ****, from my experience.

If I could go to any concert, it'd be a Sabbath one... sweet monk-ay jesus, that would kick arse.

it is more offensive because christianity is the major religion in the english-speaking world, while politics is much more spread out and based on personal opinion. not to say that religion isn't based on personal opinion, but rather that people are more easily offended on the basis of religion that politics.

Didn't see the crossed out cross, not sure about being offended even though I go to church. I'm a firm believer in the right of everyone to express their views, even if I disagree with them. I'm not offended by the Bush avatars, even though I voted for him, actually, I voted against Kerry. I especially like the monkeys. I don't like the sig that goes with it. He's trying to stop the progress of medical science, he's against gay rights, he's not very keen on protecting the environment and he's not very friendly to the rest of the world. Yet, for some reason, I really do admire him.

So saying that he's a liar or that he's stupid is annoying me for two reasons. Firstly it is completely untrue, secondly it undermines the rest of the people who're trying to make rational, logical, fact-driven arguments against (some of) Bush's policies.

There's another side to this story. Are you sure Google will index XHTML 2.0 as soon as browsers start supporting it?

This was an issue for XHTML until recently (1 year or so if I remember correctly), and still is for XML.

XML with XSLT will work perfectly in IE and FF (though not in Opera), but one cannot use XML client-side because Google is not indexing it.
When we're talking XML, Google and Opera are the villains, not IE.

They index Microft Word documents and they don't index XML. How stupid is that?

XHTML2.0 seems interesting to me, too... if it does come out, I'ma support it ASAP. I belong to a subculture called "The Furry Fandom". To us, a Fursona (short for Furry Persona) is basically an anthropomorphic animal (animal given human-like characteristics) that we choose to represent us online and in real life, whether it be through roleplaying, writing stories, chat rooms, forums, artwork, or fursuiting (dressing up in an animal costume.)

In my case, Jack Daniels Krowfight is an idealized version of myself; often Fursonas and the people behind them are wildly different.

Hope this helps.

Not quite. Caracals are of the genus Caracal while Lynxes are of the genus Lynx

Curious... have you ever tried to draw? Not with a specific topic in mind (this limits you), and not trying to get a specific look (big no-no, it'll come out like crap no matter what), but just doodled things on a paper for 20 minutes, or so? A free draw, whatever comes to mind. If you do that a while, you'll most likely develop a style for drawing, and though it'll most definitely take a while, once you get more confident, you'll get better and better, as long as you're not trying to draw a specific thing at first. Just a #2 pencil, and a notebook (woot for top margins... either that or a newfound interest in S.S.), and just doodle idly while you're waiting for a page to load, or someone to reply.

Actually, no, I've never really doodled. The only time I do drawing is when I'm making Christmas cards.

More prevalent next/prev buttons would help greatly (I didn't notice them until I just ctri+f'ed for "next")... a lot of elements of the design could be improved. Make sure, in the finished copy, one doesn't have to move his cursor to find the next button, but instead just "scroll into place," if you know what I mean.

A larger font isn't quite what I meant. They just need to be put in such a way that they're not part of the footnotes (banner-blindness, footnote-blindness, same thing). *shrug*

Well... there isn't much design to speak of. Good content, and lots of it, but it's not presented as well as it could be. It just seems unfinished, is all.

I've backread all the comics I've read, and since I'm reading them consecutively, I like to be able to read a comic (maybe scroll once or twice) and then click to get to the next one. It's a lot more enjoyable that way.

I did redo them in an inline list ( ie li{display:inline;}), at the bottom of the page, and that looked a hell of a lot better. Having the navigation at the bottom of the page is traditional.

Well... there isn't much design to speak of. Good content, and lots of it, but it's not presented as well as it could be. It just seems unfinished, is all.

It IS incomplete, I've got about 250 comics to go!

I've backread all the comics I've read, and since I'm reading them consecutively, I like to be able to read a comic (maybe scroll once or twice) and then click to get to the next one. It's a lot more enjoyable that way.

You mean, have only one comic per page in the Chronology? The reason I haven't done that is because that would either require over 300 seperate pages (the original site was purely done in HTML and CSS) or more knowledge of PHP than I have right now.

Maybe we should either do this by email (mrinitialman@hotmail.com) or create another thread for discussing this site.

In other news, what do you think of my new avatar?

MstrBob
04-08-2005, 07:28 PM
Good god. You HAVE to use a server side language for something like a webcomic. It's just utterly insane otherwise. Easiest method would be to put them all in a directory, and number them. 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg, ect. Then you just pass a variable

page.php?comic=3

And use that variable to print the comic:

<?PHP echo('<img src="comicdirectory/'+$_GET['comic']+'.jpg">'); ?>

And then you're links would be:

<?PHP
echo('<a href="page.php?comic='+($_GET['comic']-1)+'">Previous</a>');
echo('<a href="page.php?comic='+($_GET['comic']+1)+'">Next</a>');
?>

Barebones. Maybe one or two other things, like do a check on the comic variable, make sure it doesn't go past 0 or the number of comics you have. but really very simple.

Mr Initial Man

<dd><a href="URL">Optional link</a></dd>

Use a database system. I'm telling you, this is NOT something you'll want to be having in each HTML file. You'd be much better off with a database system or if you have to, perhaps storing the comic info in an XML file. This is really a case where your server side option would be far better.

Crazy lynx... :rolleyes:

I blunder in occasionally. :D

And why does one have to use a server-side language for something like a webcomic? It can't be that hard to do it by hand. A template system in DreamWeaver or the like would probably be easier than databases - especially for the uninitiated, albeit slightly filesize-heavier. And I need to say :D because they aren't normally lurid green.

SS makes things like that a lot easier.

Mr Initial Man Does your host provide phpmyadmin?

Mr Initial Man
04-09-2005, 04:25 AM
Because webcomics can run up to the HUNDREDS of strips; the one I'm doing currently numbers over 300, and that's just the ARCHIVES. Scott said he's likely to add in his own comments as well.

Right now, MstrBob is helping me with the database, and there's a few monkey wrenches to throw in.
