Whenever I save a .gif file (in PS7), to use its transparency, the end result is very rough and gritty around the edges against the background that I use it with. What settings should I use to save it as a .gif where the image has smoother edges? I have not really been working with that many web graphics so I had never run into this problem before.

Are you optimize the file through 'Save for Web...' from the file menu? If you are, (making sure transparency is checked) select a matte color. That color helps to blend jaggy edges into the background color of your web page -- and it's usually the same background color of your web page.
I hope this helps some :-)
