Well... this is pretty "General" (which is why I posted it here), and it's a bit off course - but since I really need to know how to do this (and there are so many fun and intelligent people on this forum)...

JUST ASK THE QUESTION, khaki!!!

How do I get rid of some of the things that are in the Windows Tray on a Windows2000 desktop?

Y'know, it's the place where all manner of icons appear as the OS loads.
I don't mind the virus protection (and even the Java Console icon that shows up when I'm online), but it's the WinZip and MSN Messenger and a bunch of other stuff that I want to get rid of (from showing/loading).

I know that I can CLOSE them manually, but they just appear again at the next boot-up.

Where do I go (and what do I have to do) to get those things to stop automatically loading on startup?
(if I need them, I'll just open them myself)

Anyone know this?
Can you help me out?
Thanks.

Most programs have "Options". Right click the icon and click Options, browse through them, and remove it from there.

If you don't want to mess around with the registry this is a handy utility (and free :D ).

That does the same things as "msconfig" typed in Run, right!

Oh.... yeah. That worked (options. of course!).
Thanks jdavia (that couldn't have been a little more obvious could it? lol)
I feel like such a ditz (I guess I was trying to make it harder than it was. Should've just asked this about an hour ago and spared myself all of the frustration and the eye-strain).

Hey meow. I checked-out the link. That was sort of what I was hoping to find on my PC already.
I'm a bit chicken to download it though (seems like it gets a bit close to all of the major innards, and that makes me nervous). Maybe if I get something that's a bit more persistent about hanging around the tray, I'll give it a shot.

As always...
Thank you all for your help.

No, it's perfectly safe. It only accesses the keys where programs are added to start with Windows. You choose what to delete or you can just disable them too.
