Editing source code?

Hello, I have just begun to learn Javascript and while I was on my regular forum (non computer related) I noticed that one member had actually added a field to his profile. ie. Location/occupation etc.
No one else seems able to do this and I was wondering if it is an unethical practice?
I have tried editing the source code but as I expected didn't actually change the form at all. It is phpBB software. Can anyone do this?
