How do I send a text to a mobile from my website ?

You can't without an sms gateway which is very hard to get access to.

I was offered this option from a web designer - so it must be easily do-able.

I can ask him to do it but as usual I'd rather DIY

You can either get an SMS gateway from a company such as Clickatell (http://www.clickatell.com/) or use an email to sms system such as this one (http://www.sms2email.com/). I don't have personal experience with either of these companies, they are just some I have found while browsing. It would probably pay to shop around a bit for the best deal.

Thats a good pageing site, but notice how they have to ask what network the phone is on? That is because every network is different.

I did a bit more searching and came up with clickatell and also bigfoot which looks like its free !
