My website updates sporadically after uploading files even when my own temporary internet files are deleted and it cannot be relied on.
I have a two page website constructed in Microsoft Front Page. The main page has three Stock Charts, chart1, chart2, etc and three pieces of Art, art1, art2, etc. There are one or two links and everything is working perfectly.
When I update a replacement chart or charts and maybe a replacement painting or paintings (charts are always the same size but the paintings sizes vary) I save the new Graphic as a web .gif in Adobe Paintshop with the original name.. chart1, art3, etc..
I only have to open Front Page when a painting is changed.. just to correct the SIZE.
After uploading the replacement files by ftp, the website will sometimes refresh immediately. Sometimes not for 24 hours. And everywhere in between. Currently, I have uploaded 3 new paintings but the website is showing the OLD paintings with the NEW sizes.
I give in.. any ideas?

Hi,
I use FrontPage extensively for some very large sites and have never seen this.
I notice however that you are FTPing the files up. Are you taking all the folders as well as FrontPage needs some of the extra folders as well as the basic files.
When using FrontPage it is MUCH better to PUBLISH rather than FTP if this is possible for you. Basically the server allow FrontPage to upload the files without you having to FTP them up. It also handles updating only those files which have changed automatcially.
If you have to use FTP try deleting the files from your webserver and uploading everything in the website folder (subfolders and all) from your machine and it should work...

Thanks Paul - I thought I was alone on Earth! lol
I use ftp just because I like it! I thought the small window when publishing with Front Page was a bit stingy so I looked around one weekend and found a terrific little ftp application that I feel comfortable with.. simple as that.
For the first time, today, before your post, I uploaded the supplementary files you are talking about but I had been waiting for it to refresh since last night and it refreshed OK a couple hours after uploading the supplementaries.
I've tried deleting all the files on the server and replacing them with the new files but it doesn't really make any difference.
(..the theory behind the ftp is interesting tho' - why could this be a problem..?)
Paul, I'll try the Publish option tonight and re-post here in 24 hours approx. Thnx.

Updated the three charts. When I checked two minutes after upload chart1 had updated ok but charts 2 & 3 were still from the previous day. I checked twice more after maybe half an hour and an hour but they were still unchanged. I just checked again after three and a half hours after upload and they are now updated OK. Is this normal or not?

Hi,
This COULD be a problem with the server. The delay should not be there, but I have heard of this before... Sometimes it can take a few hours or overnight to update. If this is the case then it is the load on the server or the load on FrontPage Server Extensions preventing it for performing the update immediately.
Are you sure you emptied your browser cache before you checked again ? If the date/time on the server or the date/time on the publishing PC were out of synch this could also cause a problem, but I am not sure how one got updated and the other two didnt !

You may have received my email but now that I'm a M E M B E R, I learned a trick hit the F5 button then refresh, seems to work better and I don't know why. That's on Win98 but was on someone's website.

Hi, F5 is the standard Windows (all versions) refresh... It works in Explorer and Internet Explorer to refresh file listings etc. It COULD be a refresh problem so give it a go... Paul
