Hi all. I am just a university student doing computer science. I understand programming, but I have no knowledge about commerce.

I am interested in creating a website using osCommerce to sell prints on canvas. But I am very unsure about the payment process. I would like it to be able to accept credit cards as the only payment option (for now).

What steps must I take to be able to do this - bank accounts, etc.

Also, I am in South Africa, but would probably rather accept US dollars or British pounds than rands.

Please help me with this. I know its probably very open ended, but I would appreciate anyone filling at least some of the gaps in the hole that is my knowledge of commerce.

There's a lot involved in starting an eCommerce site. If you just want to get your feet wet without having to go through the credit check, getting your own certificate, and all of the other expenses then set up a PayPal account. You can use their shopping cart and accept credit card payments from people without forcing them to set up an account. Just keep in mind that you may have to register a ficticious business name and business license in your own state. Some states require you to collect sales tax from people purchasing from within the state.
