I have purposely not submited my site to:
http://www.google.com/addurl.html
It's been a month since I've had it up, but I don't see it ranking any of my keywords. I check it with:

Does google wait for sites to be submited?

Google has to somehow find your site - either by a direct submission, or crawling a page with a link to your site. If there are other sites which link to yours, it should find it eventually. Of course, it's not guaranteed - I have a site which I submitted directly a month ago and it still hasn't been indexed.

James,

The bots will eventually find you site on their own. However, you can encourage them to visit by using a robots.txt file. Most bots are looking for this. Here is some info on creating a robots.txt file: http://www.outfront.net/tutorials_02/adv_tech/robots.htm

Also, probably more important, is to have plenty of "content", not spammed keywords, but content that is related to your site. Of course, the content should have logical usage of relevant keywords within it.

Lastly, it does take time for the spiders to find your site.
Be patient.

I looked at the link: it's getting too advanced for me to optimize pages for specific search engines. I simply use the index follow and the no index call for the robots. As I learn more, I'll probably find benefit for other robot commands as well.

Googles algorithm to generalise your website as important enough to show in its indexes, is by having quality incoming backlinks.

If you have any your can view them by searching link:www.yoursite.com under Google search.

Get a link from a page that is indexed by Google and you will be indexed, it will take a while for you to move up in the SERPs though, especially if your keywords are competitive.

Submitting a site to Google is a complete waste of time, they will only index a site thet is found through spidering.
