Since they keep springing up, I decided to start one thread where people could post invites.
I'll start by offering 2 for the first two people to reply to this.
David Harrison

I already have a Gmail, so don't offer me another (it's not fair if some people have more than 1 and others don't have any :().
However I've done a similar thing at my blog, except I'll probably give it out to the person that sings my praises the most. j/k :D
Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, PLUG (http://www.quiterude.com/comment.asp?blog=8http://www.quiterude.com/comment.asp?blog=8).

Well, since Gmail is still beta, they increase users by giving existing users these things called invites. Existing Gmail users can email them to anyone they want. I think how many invites a user gets is random, though I may be wrong.
Edit: Argh, Dan you beat me to it. Oh well, I made it up by spamming that link of yours.

08-25-2004, 07:16 PM
Thanks guys yeah i had an idea it could be that but what is the difference with getting an invite than just regulary signing up like on hotmail.
MstrBob
08-25-2004, 07:21 PM
Well, Gmail is different from hotmail. 1000 megabytes of space, it sorts all your replies into coversations (unlike many free email clients), you don't have to delete emails cause of space, you can archive them, and use the google search engine to search through them. There's these things called labels. You can import contacts from yahoo, outlook, and ect, ect, ect...
Yeah, I like it man, its my new email of choice. I've gotten but 1 invitation to give out, though. Oh well, I heard its random.
Also, its only going to be invitational until Gmail goes public. Its fully operational, but in beta phase. When they work out all the kinks, it will be public.
Ben Rogers
08-25-2004, 07:29 PM
GMail is cooler than Hotmail, Sharkey. Bob brings up a lot of good points, but it's just VERY fast, very organized, and it lets me keep my e-mails after reading and replying. Also, the reply form is on the same page as the one which you read the e-mail on, which helps. And to top it off, you can feel special because it's invite only. :D (No invites to give yet, btw)
sharkey
08-25-2004, 07:29 PM
Ahh got you now man sounds really good compared to crappy hotmail which tells me every week to delete my emails.
Cheers for info

Heh sam do what I do and just make up the first and last name for the person. They wont totally get it, and maybe not even notice that when they email people its that name you put into the invite. Only real info you need is email
Sam

I've thought about that, but when they accept, it adds them to your contact list, and I'd rather have their real name than one I made up for them.

Why don't I have any friggin' invites?
Gmail used to be so much cooler... now everyone has it. They should not make it public, and only for us cool Web Developers. To prove your worth, you must present a valid, semantic, accessible website. :D

You know, considering the large amount of people getting more invites, I have a feeling that the day of Gmail going public is fast approaching. And when that happens, it will lose some of its sexiness and we'll lose our bragging rights!

As the one I've just created is a confidential address, I won't be giving out any of them, but I'll offer 4 invites here.
PM me with your current email, your first and last name if you want one.

You want a gmail steelers? <opinion>Nothing is wrong with it. But I think that Google has done a bad job (yet again) handling gmail, in my opinion. The worst thing Google could have done was to sellout the market with the product, so when it opens, a majority of users will already have had gmail. Similarly, a salesman would never want to give out a free product as a sample to an entire village, or when the product is available for purchasing, interest is lost, and customers are few. I think Goog,e has had a bad approach the whole way thru.</opinion>
Sam already sent me an invite, thanks though.

<story>I was helping a user with a cgi form emailer, and the to email address was to a gmail account, and an error message was to come up if one submitted a blank message: "Don't send me a blank message, because I don't have tons of space in my inbox."</story> hmmm
I still think the approach has been poor, and actually think that the invites themselves are a very bad idea. IMO, they are basically allowing this service to everyone who would like it, and at the point of opening, they will have exhausted all of the users who want it. Unless they publically allow users very quickly, I will find the entire project as a sad success (only because 1 gig is never a failure :D).

definatley cheeky. i think maybe only people on the forums with over 20 posts are allowed a GMail invite. that way we are getting something for our invites. a better bigger contribution on the forums.
Best Wishes,

It is nothing negative here ... just I thought the point of you getting rid (hence changing) your name was because you planned to act differently.

I never said I'd make that kind of change. If I remember correctly, I explained myself in the thread concerning the name change.

I think that that encourages me to change, especially with my resolution to stop making fun of Canadians, and to stop posting so damn much in the Lounge, ... .The word, that, in this post is referring o lavalamp's post in which he stopped his idea of changing because of previous posts.
Seems to me that looks as if you were planning a change ... Dr. Script

Seems to me that looks as if you were planning a change ... Dr. Script Yes, but not in the way I talk. That was referring to lame jokes about... everyone, and posting in the lounge so much, and posting in the real threads. I gave up on the second resolution...
