Possibly the best thing to do is use a video editing suite. Windows ME upwards contains a Windows Movie Maker, but there are others available such Cyberlink PowerDirector http://www.gocyberlink.com and click on PowerDirector. There is a free evaluation version online here(!). Save the file, open it on your hard disk, and when you go to produce movie you will find options for exporting sound or/and video, and I think you can choose a file type such as wav.

A lot depends on what you want to do with it afterwards, but there are music tools available free for changing the music type afterwards - i got mine off a cover cd for a pc mag.

Somone else may know of some dedicated software to rip an avi/mpeg etc, but i don't. Try the free download or Windows Movie Maker.

If you are ripping .avis, this works well. http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Way/9629/avi2wav.htm

Would something like that work for audio, too? I was just asked to put a weekly audio file on a web site I made for a non-profit organization and I said I never did it, but would hunt down some info - then stumbled onto this thread so I thought I might as well ask. I do have Windows ME, if that helps, but this is strictly voice - no music I don't think. I was also told the files are digital, not on cassettes any longer, if that makes a difference. New turf for me - *GULP*!!

What do you mean exactly? There is loads of free software on the internet for ripping files from one format to another - e.g. wav to mp3 and so on which may be what you mean, but other than that to find out about windows movie maker go into the start menu, programs, and its under accessories. Under the help menu you can take a tour - its quite good really. You can use the record or import commands, and export as only video from what i can see at the mo. then use something like a ripper to change format. I prefer cyberlink - that really does have export options as audio files.

That wasn't supposed to happen...

It would probably help us if you could tell us what format the file is in and what format you want it to be.

Gosh, I wish I had the answers for you! This is for a Dial-A-Prayer site and all I was told is that the audio is in digital format and the wondered if that could be put on the web site -I've never done anything like this before, so I don't have the answers you need - wish I did!!! When I learn more, I'll be back though and I really appreciate your responses. I did worry that I didn't know enough, but it does sound like I should be able to do this, right?

Certainly. I'd recommend finding a sound format that gives you decent quality with a small download time. MIDI seems to work well...

Dave - thanks for the Movie maker tips - I have it but never looked at it at all - I'll check it out and "do the tour" as you suggested - maybe I'll find some answers!

well I have a music video which is AVI format. I want to extract the song cos I couldn't find it anywhere on Kazaa or Imesh. I want the format of the song to be either wav or WMV. Can I still do it?

Hi all...since this thread is still going, I did find out what type of audio device I would need to make into a file for the web - It is a tiny hand-held Olympus VN-90/VN-180 recorder, which utilizes built-in flash memory - I looked it up on the Olympus site, but couldn't find (or didn't recognize) anything that helped me in regard to turning it into an audio file for the web...any clues anyone?? Thanks!

I tried a search in yahoo for it but nowhere does it mention the file format. Only real way I can think of is ask the client for a sample file to experiment with, and then use the old right click, properties, on the file in its folder. At least you could find the file type that way... Hope it's something tidy - the new Olympus recorders in my pc magazine use dss or something like that... which i've never heard of...

How would a little thing like that have folders, anyway??? WOuldn't I need something on my computer to be able to "convert" it? I'm getting more confused as I go here! Right now I can't get my hands on it, but I'll see what I can do about that. Thanks so much for trying!

Actually I meant the folder on your pc when you get it there... But those little dictaphones do actually have folders... My dads got a sony one and that came with loads of pc software with it, except that you need the cable they didn't supply to get the stuff on your pc...

I know, I called a computer store today and explained it all and in short, this could cost me about 150.00 in equipment - give or take a ten or two. Sigh. Although the guy I talked to said it's really awesome and he just loves doing it - he said he has files he changes to mono audio files for the net and then told me what I need but I sure don't remember what it was! I told him I'd stop in sometime and take a look at what he was talking about. I guess it's not as easy as I'd hoped! He did say when you convert it, it converts to a MP3 - that I understood...lol.

As much as that? I get the professional reader for Dad for £40 in the UK... Probably because the olympus has a built in memory not a removeable one.

Does the dictaphone have a headphone jack? If so, you can purchase a double ended jack lead - i.e. like a speaker cable going into the back of the pc, but with that plug both ends, and then do the slower (but very cheap - £2.50 for the cable) method of playback on the dictaphone and voice recorder on the pc.
Cheaper this way :)

Well, it is possible this guy just wanted to sell me the more expensive piece of equipment - he's got me because I don't have a clue what I need! Before I make any decisions, I'll definitely check around and ask more questions, though. I can't even afford to fork over that much right now. Would be great if I could find something for a better price - thanks for the info!

I use Video mp3 extractor (www.geovid.com) to extract soundtrack from movie. Its easy-to-use and quite fast program. It has a batch function so it can save your time... Moreover, it makes mp3 file without any quality losses! (There is also a free ver.)

The other way you can go:
You can record sound in realtime using Soundforge. Its easy too, but much longer...
Make your choice

www.audiotoolsfactory.com offer a very simple audio extraction tool. I have used it a few times and have been happy.
