Unlock my thread... how dare you lock it! It was a perfectly good off topic thread and you killed it Jick! :(

If you do not unlock my thread... ill create a new off topic thread, and it will be titled peo's thread. Grrrr.

ps: I know there is a thread about this already, but posting this is my way of sticking it to the man... that is jick.

ROTFL, nice.

YEAH! UNLOCK THE THREAD!

Also, it was not all Jick’s fault; Akadis (that evil mischievous maker!!!) highly suggested that the thread be closed.

It’s one of the biggest threads in this place
It’s in The Coffee Lounge, where spam resides, so it is in its rightful place, not hindering the asking and answering of questions
Because y’ll didn’t have a reason to close it!!!

Absolutely no reason to close it!

Yeah man. Why give a reason to re-open it? There was no reason to close it in the first place. A pretty damned good sh** catcher if ya ask me.

This is... an outrage! You have no justification in closing it! There was nothing objectionable! It is clearly related to the topic of this thread which is a thread for those thing non web development related! There was no point in closing the thread, simply because we liked and had a place of posting many off topicness! No where is there a rule against it. There was nothing threatening or offensive or illegal going on.

Simply point out one good reason to close it.

My reason is i had the pleasure of chatting and reading in that thread. it was too long to annoy it was a friendly chat for the bennefit of those like me whom are allergic to instant messaging. When down, we knew we had a place to retreat to, to shed our problems and relax. Why do you take that from us? Does bandwidth consume our hearts? I found my safe box in that thread and now my glass walls are shattered. My tears of joy are now replaced for tears of sorrow for i know, the longest thread attempt will be no more. I wrote a poem or rather, a song for you kind moderator persons, to release the lock that is "closed".

( Sing to the tune of "I Believe I Can Fly" by Mr. R. Kelly.

I used to think that i could not go on....
but then i found the thread that was so longgggg....
The're are many reasons why it should be closed....
but why would keeping it open be so wronggggg.

if i could do it,
i would release it,
unlock it and embrace it,
there's nothing to it.................jick

i believe i can post,
i believe i can touch the button,
i used to think about it in those latter days,
spread my fingers and type away,
i believe i could close
close my problems in that open host....
i believe i can post.
(i believe i believe) i beLIEVVVVVE i can po-o-o-ooost,

There is, in fact, an excellent reason. What on earth does it have to do with Peo's birthday?

from somewhere round p70. Note I'm not picking on the person who wrote this, it was the only post I could find with a topic in it...
There are 'free' spyware zappers and firewalls; I've learned from experience not to trust most of them. There are many programs out there that promise to elimate spyware, but are actually spyware themselves.

Is peo having spyware for his brithday? Maybe.

When someone goes looking conversation on a certain topic, will they expect to find it in 'peo's birthday thread'? No.
So for reasons including web etiquette, forum searchability and other users ease of use, start a new thread with a relevant title...

This is The Coffee Lounge; I don’t think many people come here for meaningful conversation and/or information (except us crazies). I thought one reason for having The Coffee Lounge was to reduce the number of off-topic posts in the other areas. I don’t think anything can be off-topic in The Coffee Lounge.

As I understand it the purpose was for people to be able to discuss topics other than web development. That isn't an excuse for rambling threads that cover every subject under the sun.

but they're not easily searchable (from a human perspective) and make it harder for mods to keep track of them - i.e. when they degenerate into a slanging match.

Anyway, it's well past your birthday, it's had a run of over 3 months (longer than most people's birthdays...), so it's time to move on to either someone else's birthday thread, or you can start thinking about what you want to discuss in your next one.

Noone wants to find anything in there. It's not meant to be useful to future comers. It's just something to relax to! C'mon, if it hadn't been for teh lounge, I would've left these forums and quit webdev, or (for better or worse) left the forums and stayed on geocities, learning the intricacies of table based design. Teh thread represents the lounge. Closing it is to kill teh lounge. You monsters! :p

NOTE- I'm a hypocrite, yes I am.

I vote we boycott the forums until the thread is ressurected! :D

Why not? I still believe that we need to set up some kind of forum (no, not a forum like these forums) every so often to make sure everyone is on the same page and such.

If there was no order then about 50%(or more) of this forum would be spam.

If there was no order then about 50%(or more) of this forum would be spam. The mods are there to prevent spam, hateful content, and other such things. They aren't there to say you can't have a drifting conversation, in a Lounge forum.

davidbrent
10-09-2004, 06:58 PM
every discussion moves onto to further topics relevent or not. as Ben said, a drifting conversation is right. by starting a new thread saying "pointless conversation" or something like that we will be defeating the objects of the forums. we would be just saying in a place where you can randommley chat, you have to have a random chat thread so people can find relevent information more easily. the coffee lounge is like a huge thread with sub threads of randomness and the whole point is just like a drifting thread.
