I have a question for y'all.

Okay, at the moment my Desktop, aswell as my ibook is all wirelessly on my network. The ibook has an airport extreme card, and the internet on it is very fast, and doesn't lag or anything. On my XP machine on the other hand, the signal is choppy and the lag is pretty terrible. Now, from the XP machine i have a USB Network Adapter, to allow it to get onto the network. Here is my question. At the moment the Adapter is being plugged in via a USB 1.1 port. If I upgrade the 1.1 to 2.0 will the internet speed increase because of it?

OR would it be easier to just get a wireless network adapter in the form of like a PCI card? And just put that into it?

If the latter is your choice, is it hard to do?

Thanks :)

Hi,
upgrading your USB1.1 to USB2.0 will do the trick. Currently there are 3 data transfer rates for USB. USB1 goes at 1.5mb/s, USB1.1 goes at 12mb/s and USB goes up to 480mb/s
There are 2 wireless technologies you can utilise; Bluetooth or Wi-Fi(aslo known as the 802.11 standard).
Bluetooth is still first generation currently Bluetooth1.1 and has a data transfer rate of 720kb/s. Wi-Fi or 802.11 is now upto 802.11g with 802.11n being comercially available in the UK end of this year. The 802.11g standard has a much higher data transfer rate that Bluetooth but still half as much as CAT 5 cables. The 802.11g standard has a data transfer rate of 56mb/s where as the new 802.11n has 100mb/s.
Bluetooth is set to be replacing USB so printers, monitors, digital cameras etc. will all be bluetooth.
Wi-fi is the replacement for networking cables, CAT 5 and RJ45 connections.

Hope this helps.
