I'm not extremely fond of the header/navigation graphics, myself. They seem a little... choppy. I also think you should pick a two-color scheme. The green ads look okay with the light orange/pinkish header, but the gray and blue must go; or change the green ads to a bluish color, and make the navigation menu a blue color...or something. Just a thought. The last thing is, please read the sticky post in this forum, which will cover technical aspects of the site (the code instead of the design, which is what I reviewed). Tables for layout is a bad idea, and that post explains why. Otherwise, good job, I may bookmark this resource for future reference. :)

I agree with the comments about the fonts and colors used.

For maximum usability i would suggest putting the conversion links as close to the top of the page as possible so users dont have to scroll down to use them. put the tell a friend etc links at the bottom or sides.

not sure about about the background. if you feel you need something other than a plain colored bg i would suggest using an image that has some connection with conversions/maths/etc, rather than just picking an image for no real reason.

the quick selection menu would take a user longer to get to the conversion they want than clicking on the link directly, so i would drop that in favour of having everything on view.

http://www.onlineconversion.com/ is another conversion website similar to yours and suffering from the same usability problems i.e. the user has to select "temperature" and then select from celsius and to fahrenheit rather than being able to select the conversion they want directly from the main page. yours has individual links to inch and mile and yet they still link to the length subpage making the user select again.

conversion and other such sites are used to get an answer to a question quickly, they aren't the kind of sites a user spends a lot of time navigating around, so anything about the site which slows down the getting of that answer just frustrates users. i think your site would be much more effective if all they selections where available on the main page so that once the user has choosen that conversion and is redirected to the conversion page all they have to do is enter the values and click Convert!

a very useful site that i think im going to be using in the future, but you can make it more useful.

(could also add a hex/rgb/hsl conversion for us friendly web designers)
