Adding FTP accounts to a server.

Right. So as you're all no doubt aware, I have made the bestestestest ever server in teh world and placed upon it a truly amazing page. (see sig if you've no idea what I'm on about.)

My question is; How do I set up FTP accounts for friends to upload to me with and set restrictions on which directories they may access? Before Now I've just been used to using Cpanel which as most people here probably know is just a case of type and click. But what do I do to set up accounts for a server that frankly can't afford a Cpanel and in all honest will probably never need one?

Download yourself an FTP sever program. I always like Filezilla. The Filezilla program allows you to create and edit users and usergroups. It's rather simple. Depends on your FTP server, methinks.

FileZilla is a powerful FTP-client for Windows 9x, ME, NT4, 2000 and XP.

I didn't say that you HAD to use Filezilla... Sheesh. There are FTP servers out there. Find one, install, and use. Hmm, does this help any? http://www.usinglinux.org/ftp/

Oh wait. I just seen Unix mentioned on the page somewhere. Can't make any sense of the page though. No indication of which platform each "release" is for, let alone what it actually is. :confused:

Ah yeah that link helps. pointing me in the right direction now. I googled before but all I got were pages telling me what FTP is (duh) and not how to set it up on a server.
