Affiliate programs do work. But this is a numbers game.

A person with, for example, 20,000 visitors a day will do much better than a person with 100 visitors a day. The more visitors you can send to your sponsor the higher the percentage of sales/signups.

On the contrary ... Affiliate Programs without a doubt can and DO work.

As with anything ... it's how much you're willing to put into them, in regards to set up, USP, and promotion.

Affiliate programs definitely do work, however there are a few things
you have to get right...

1. Create a "pre-sell" page that pre-sells your traffic on the affiliate product(s) you will be sending them onto

2. Capture the contact information. As part of your pre-sell page,
you want to offer something of value (relevant with some urgency) like a minicourse, report or some other giveaway that will induce
your visitor to leave their contact information.

3. Repetitive exposure. Once you have their permission to send out
a series of messages, build a high conversion minicourse that will
expose your reader to your affiliate programs several times - chances
of success are far greater.

4. Finally - focus on building a relationship with a market you
understand - selling them products will come naturally once you do this.

Cheers...

Another way I've made our affiliate program work is by connecting it to a brick and mortar store. My wife owns a store in the small town we live in that specializes in home decor. We have several affiliates such as art.com, that match the items in our store. She keeps our website up in the actual store and sells stuff directly from our affiliates to people who don't even have a computer! I'm working on setting up a network of different stores with a single portal to jump from. The idea is to create a kind of virtual mall that can be visited from a small town store, or at home while surfing.

I'd give the link, but we are changing Jan 1st and I'm still working on the new site.

Affiliate programs do work! Of course, not all do as well or may not work, but you definitely need to target the people who would probably buy from your affiliate...

Also what makes the sale is that the company you're affiliated with has a good product/service AND has a good reputation. I've thought about this when I actively promoted Lunar Pages (http://secure.lunarpages.com/tracking/cgi-bin/clickthru.cgi?id=mkda) and Globat (http://affiliates.globat.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=mkda).

I believe Lunarpages is more reputable/popular on the web, that's why I made over $250 with them in about a year (I got the cheques soon, and it cashed out). With Globat I only made one sell.

One big mistake many newbies do is that they join many affiliates and start promoting all of them at the same time. This is NOT the way to work! Focus on a couple major ones, typically ones that make good $ and you think will sell well, and "believe" in what you're selling! :)

Although I have done extremely well promoting affiliate programs over the years, myself, I have a friend from Singapore named Ewen Chia who falls under the classification of "super affiliate" ... in other words, he makes enough money promoting other companies products to easily exist solely on the profits derived from these affiliate campaigns.

He's put together a special article that demonstrates the tactics he used to become the number one ranked affiliate for a high ticket product promotional campaign late last year.

This is a free report ... there is no obligation to purchase anything.

Ewen Chia affiliate marketing report (http://www.stuffyourinboxwithcash.com/mike.htm).

I'm sure those that have had difficulty making money with APs ... or don't believe you actually can ... will learn a lot from this.

Hello,

I believe you will be interested in our partner program(s). You will earn residual from your referrals!

Please review the attached BluePay Partner Plans. There are 3 programs to choose from.

If you choose the Affiliate program, you could simply put a banner/link on your website and/or verbally refer the client to me if you prefer. I can take care of any details for you. VAR is similar although, the VAR is more interactive with their client and prefers to contact the merchant direct for any needed documents, etc.

If you are experienced enough and want to be much more involved in the set-up, as well as take on the role as rep for your merchants, than ISO is definitely more profitable. I can help you through the training period this will require.

Let me know what program best suits you.

Contact me with questions. I look forward to hearing from you.

Just happened to catch this thread and know very little about affiliate programes but I do know that this article isn't, strictly speaking, correct:

With many merchant schemes you get what's called a 'cookie persistance' time (I might have just made the name up, but at least it describes what it's about). When a visitor clicks through to a merchants site, a cookie is placed on their machine. That cookie's timeout period is set at that time. If the visitor then returns to the merchants site and spends money within the time that the cookie is present then the affiliate gets paid. Some merchants even offer indefinate persistance cookies - therefore, unless the user clears thair cache, if someone buys something from a site even 10 years after clicking through from your site, you get paid. Sweet. And because being a merchant is so competative they all tend to outbid each other in the percentage and cookies departments.

Secondly, some merchants (although they may be hard to find) pay per lead rather than pay per sale. This means just the shear fact that someone is clicking through from your site means you get paid. I guess these merchants are so 'niche' that they can assume that a lead leads to a sale in a hefty percentage of cases, thus justifying the payment scheme and increasing their popularity with the affiliats.

Just my 2 cents :)

Affiliate programs do work. But you need to join the right one. Doesn't mean that those with huge payouts are the best bet. Some of them may be scams. That's why it's good to join affiliate networks. These networks have fraud controls in place. What's more, payment is made out by the networks. And if you have any problems, find the network hahaha

Definitely, affiliate programs work well when they setup appropriately:

1. Clear agreement and process workflow;
2. On-line tracking features associated with Affiliated account;
3. Development vendor/rep relationship;
4. Active representation.

Even though some of our affiliates make over $10K a month in various programs we manage, I try not to make it sound like a cake walk because it isn't. Affiliate marketing is very hard to get started with and overwhelming to learn, but if you devote the time and energy it can be very rewarding. Too many think it's get rich quick, throw up a couple banners and then give up when that fails.

If you are good at SEO, know how to work with datafeeds and customize them with lots of unique content so they don't look like cookie cutter sites you can do quite well. There are even tools like the IPC that help you build custom sites in around a minute without having to do any datafeed programming

Study, work hard and treat this like you would a $100,000 business and you may do well if you pick the right programs and markets. Here is a good beginner *how to get started* thread that’s 2 pages long and just jam-packed with tips, tools and resources. It's from my *affiliate forum* over at WebProWorld, which is pretty geared toward newer affiliates. If you study everything suggested in this one thread it will get you off to a really good start! http://www.webproworld.com/viewtopic.php?t=21311

One of the best ways to get started is to get Jame's Martell's book "Affiliate Marketers Handbook" and newsletter: Affiliate Buzz. I know people that swear by Jame's methods. I have spent time with him and his students and feel strongly this is a great way to begin. http://www.jamesmartell.com

The other thing I recommend is www.sitesell.com. I think Ken's software and methods would help someone get off to a stronger start.
If you would like to see some of the high paying, high integrity affiliate programs that I have chosen to consult for and tie my good reputation to, check out my 5 Star Affiliate Programs and see if any of them are a good fit for you.

Hope this helps and Best of Luck!

:: Hello ::

Excellent tools and references you have posted here! it is so important to understand not only the e marketing channels but also which tools to affiliates should use. Some affiliates only use PPC and text links where as other affiliates make tons of money through SEO and landing pages.

Do you have more resources you could share with us?

Hi peeps,

Have just spent the last four months building a niche site for rental of self catering villas, bungalows and apartments in the paradise Island of Mauritius to the public.

We are offering unbeatable prices(from £175 per week for TWO people!!!), as I have contacts over the in the industry and have built some professional business links with them. We are already getting bookings on a very small amount of traffic(just 50 unique visitors per day at the moment).

Have built an automated and fully functional affiliate programme offering 10% on all bookings to other travel sites willing to link back to us.

Just having trouble finding enough other sites to take us up on the affiliation offer now.

Any ideas on where I could get other travel sites interested on becoming affiliates of ours, would be deeply grateful!

Cheers,
RC
