i am new at this web design biz...but i seem to get most i need yet...i cannot work out why a background image will not resize from one monitor to another...

ie: is there a way to set a page to analyse the system in use and resize accordingly to that system...whether 800x600 or 1152 x 864 or larger...

maybe this is not possible???but my present client would love to have his album cover as the background...

i only have frontpage & composer @ present...is there another app which resolves this????

please help...going nuts...:confused:

I'm relatively new at graphics so I'm not 100-percent sure of this, but it's my understanding that a background image needs to be made to fit a specific size. For example, one tutorial I did said with more and more people using 1078 resolution, it's best to create a background in that length, or go with a tile - then be sure to use 100% in your table code, instead of "800" , etc.

Hope that made some sense - if I'm wrong anyone, I'm listening! :)

Yes, make sure you always use relative sizes such as %, em and ex units instead of px, for tables, font sizes etc. Images are more difficult - try to design your pages so if the image does not fill the width (for example) it is not a problem.

If you need complex effects using Javascript, use the screen object to find out the size - screen.width and screen.height return it.

thanks for the reply bellybytes...(pre-ps: just checked your site...additives in food is a study i love...my brain chemistry burns at the slightest processed matter these days...)

so...yeah the page in question is

www.blissmusic.biz

the image is the frontpage's background...

the client wishes to have that look so i have tried even just loading it as an image in a table...but for whatever reason
the picture then wont appear...gremlins are in my midst...

maybe i have too many images on the page with my little gif buttons...never have this problem thru geocities sites i build all the time...

javascript is a whole new world to me...but get the gist of what you recommended...

this site is for new age folk who really dont understand all this but i endearvour to complete it as the wish it to look naturally...their cd for the site is going national here in australia & i would love to make it look neat & tidy....

anyway thanks heaps for the reply gotta fly keep on eatin well...

:D I can relate!! Thanks for the compliment on the site...nutrition is my passion, but this computer/web stuff is coming darned close these days!! But there is SO much to learn :(

I took a look at your site, and first, I did notice you grabbed the code from geocities ( <!-- saved from url=(0041)http://www.geocities.com/theblissofbeing/ --> )

- that could be part of the problem right there. You also still have some geocities script coding in there - but they're not hosting it any longer, correct? Because then maybe you'd want to take that out - this:

<SCRIPT
language=JavaScript>var PUpage="76001079"; var PUprop="geocities"; </SCRIPT>

<SCRIPT language=JavaScript
src="Bliss Music - Homepage of Rob &amp; Oles_files/pu5geo.js"></SCRIPT>

<SCRIPT language=JavaScript
src="Bliss Music - Homepage of Rob &amp; Oles_files/ygIELib9.js"></SCRIPT>

<SCRIPT language=JavaScript>var yviContents='http://us.toto.geo.yahoo.com/toto?s=76001079&l=NE&b=1&t=1043618767';yviR='us';yfiEA(0);</SCRIPT>

You know, that page wouldn't be that difficult to code with just tables, using a 100% for the width - the overall layout is clean and crisp - just needs a little touching up, is all! It is off-center on my browser, and I have to scroll left and right, which it shouldn't really do.

I also looked at your background graphic, and the dimensions are 894 width, by 646 height - not a good size for a background. If you could make that middle area a separate graphic and then use a tile or even just a color, I think that would help a lot.

Am I saying this all right? I never could have taught - I don't have a ability to explain things well...sorry. Just ask if I was unclear on anything and if I can, I'll clue you in on my wacky way of thinking! :)

This is just a personal thing - but when you get to fixing this page up, maybe you'd want to use a nicer font - that Times-New-Roman is so ugly!! :p

Okay, next!

Hi again Zen -since I'm such a bad "explainer", I slapped together a page to show you what I mean - if the code helps you at all, by all means, grab it.

heres the link:
http://www.personalsite4you.com/bliss/bliss.html

It's very simply HTML, with a small background - well, you'll see what I mean.

Now remember, I just whipped this together as an example, so please everyone, easy on the critique, okay!!??? ;)

Well, like I said, if the code helps you figure out your problem - grab it! It's on the house...:D If you like that background or anything, grab that too - I'll leave it up for a couple more days; just hope it helps you out. I know how frustrating these things can be! :rolleyes:
