Alright fellas. I have been having a problem where my 15 GB disk drive takes 8+ HOURS to calculate how much space can be saved by Disk Cleanup (windows XP). the worst part is, the calculation is a never-ending process that never completes no matter how much time I give it.

So, I pondered what the problem could be. I have 159,763 files on this partition. about 12% fragmented, and 90% used. Yes, this is the drive with the operating system installed.

Do you think I have too many files for the disk drive?

that is quite a few files there....you should go and get another hard drive and use one for your os and the like and the other for files....just a suggestion!

I've never understood why a HDD being closer to capacity than not would slow a computer. I mean why would it it it has a FAT that the computer can just look at to quickly find a file or chunk of data?

Isn't everything a series of 1 and 0? On or off? True or false? So, technically, isn't the disk always full, but rather, we're simply looking at a measure of how much of the disk is actually meaningful. *sigh* This is beyond me.

But let's look at this:

159,763 * 1000 = 159,763,000

159,763,000 == 159.8 MBs. Well, let's make the average 5 kbs.

159,763 * 5000 = 798,815,000

798,815,000 == 798.8 Mbs.

Okay, even if average file size was like, 10k.

159,763 * 10000 = 1,597,630,000

1,597,630,000 == 1.6 Gigabytes

You get the point. 15 Gigabytes is a lot of zeroes and ones....

u really shouldnt have more then 75% of the drive used. It does slow down a lot and frags a LOT quicker. Also, trash XP, its pointless. Get windows 2k. It is a much cleaner OS and runs better. So many ppl like XP because of how it looks or whatever crap the excuse is i get. 99% of the people i know use either windows 2k or a mac. A lot of those that have used XP have switched to 2k after i told them to a bit and liked it a bit. But i would say clean your drive out a bit or get a bigger harddrive ;)

If you could download 2k and quickly upgrade (according to you) without much trouble, I would. But as is, I don't know anything about changing OS', and I'd rather not bother with it. A lot of people probably feel the same way.

I have 31k files on my c drive, which is a partition that is about 10gig in size. I have 110k on my d drive and 40k on my e drive.

Hmmmm... If I were to switch from XP to W2000, wouldn't I have to take everything off my hard drive first?

I have never upped from 2k to xp. You might be able to keep the file system intact though, they are both ntfs file systems.

My system came with XP. So I was just wondering.

no, but i would suggest you do. Back all your files up and do a COMPLETE whipe if your going to change. You dont want any of the crap from xp left on. hope that helps :)

also, good man PeOfEo, stay with 2k :D
