Hard drive is how much space you have for files. Ram is random access memory. If you run out of ram your system is going to lock up. If you run out of hard drive space you system will not lockup bit windows will give you a bunch of error messages.

A Virus? I'd suggest running a virus scan with a good anti-virus program.

Just taking it out of standby mode would affect the memory...

Somehow I doubt he is talking about hard drive space.... he says he had 447MB in the beginning, which is an extremely small amount, even for a laptop... where are you getting these numbers from, Testinging?

Actually, I had something similar happen to me not too long ago, just on a much larger scale. I had 27gigs left on my hard drive. I go to sleep, wake up, turn on my computer and there is 200MBs left. No idea how, I only could find a few gigs of files and programs. It led me to conclude that I had a virus that was telling Windows I was using a much smaller hard drive then it really had, and slowly it looked all processes up until the computer stopped working. Luckily it was fixed upon a nice clean reformat, repartion and reinstall of WinXP.
In Conclusion, I have no idea how to fix it, but I would assume running an updated Antivirus software could fix it. I ended up taking the easy way out and reformatting. Due to your lack of knowledge on computers (no offense meant) I would not recommend reformatting unless you have all your important files backed up, and that you have your OS's Installation CD and Product Registration Key handy.
