Set Width as %

Hey ppl

Does anyone know if it is possible to set the width of an item as a percentage using javascript?
As i have tried it but when i set it to a % the item does not show up?
e.g

when i set it like this it shows and works fine:

'width': 155,

but when i set it like this it does not even appear on my webpage??

'width': 60%,

Any ideas why this is and how to get around it??
