I sometimes see at freelancer websites that people ask for a site that can handle thousands of visitor at the same time. What can a programmer do for that?
what i mean is that in my opinion only server part of a web site relates to the volume of traffic and not the script.

there are tricks you can use to reduce/optimize databases and/or queries, php functions and such

but mainly it comes do to the quality and preformance of the server
