Does anyone happen to know if it hurts with the SE's, helps or doesn't matter if a Web site has an entire directory using on of those directory services? I get so many requests from sites with link directory's (Zeus I've read all the negative stuff about so I don't take any exchanges who use them but there are so many more) and many do have a google ranking - but many don't. I was just curious if SE's "frown" on those directories, if they really help or if it doesn't matter. When I see some of those the number of links is so ridiculous, and the site still will have a lower ranking than mine - that's what got me to wondering. Tx!

Do you mean like just big huge link lists? Like those elite poll sites and all?

Yes, I think that's what I mean - the lists are so big that they actually call them "directories" and you first go to a page where you pick your "category", and from there get a HUGE, long list of links - so many you say "forget this" and get the heck out of there. Here's an example - it's the link that I was given yesterday when I received their link request:

I dont like them lol. I like it when seach engines divide themselves up into easy browsing catagories, like www.dmoz.org for example or yahoo or google. Thats what I thought you were talking about at first. But those big link lists, I would image search engines would hate em too. Talk about a site about nothing. Half the time the are not even organised. The people that make them cannot think of any thing to make a site about so they collect links...

That one for example has that dark line on the left side which makes it really hard to read the text. Talk about poor planning

DITTOS! :D You took the words right out of my mouth - I would think SE's would hate them, too - can't see that it's the same as legitimate and relevant link exchanges. They put anyone and everyone willing on those sites!
