Hey,
My P.C randomly shuts off, it completely loses power.
Can this be caused by anything other than a faulty power supply, ie a problem with the ATX on the motherboard or a peripheral drawing too much power.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

make sure everything is connected and all the plugs are securely set. Then take out the memory. Turn on the comp and see if it stays on. Then unplug the vid card. See if it stays on. Then take out the hd, see if it stays on. Then try a different power supply. If it still doesn't stay on then its the motherboard or cpu. TEst the cpu in a different comp to make sure it is okay. If it is, then its the motherboard. If everything works with the other psu, then the psu you have in your comp is broken. Ask if you don't understand.

As always the first thing you do when you have a problem should be:
Take everything out but the proc, memory, and the video and see if it posts properly. It is embarrassing to find out that you have been screwing around with some ram when the problem is that your motherboard is really retarded and does not want to boot because a pci device was somehow messed up.

I would say if you can test another power supply. If you have another pc handy just jack its and sit it up beside your box. If I could I would hook you up... I have 3 spare power supplies.

It's definately either the motherboard or the power supply, looks like I'm spending some cash.

overheating can also cause system shutdowns, so check your CPU isn't going above it's shutdown temp before you splash out...

Since you're in the UK you might want to check out http://www.planetmicro.co.uk/ - they have some good prices.

If you are on a motherboard that is about a year to two years old and running amd your power will not go off until you see a small cloud of smoke coming out of your system :p

But yes, intel procs will downclock / cut power with heat because of a built in thermoster and most nerwer amd mobos will downclock the amd proc via the cpu ratio to protect it because amd does not have an onboard thermoster (well amd 64 does I thin, but not regular athalon / xp).

I have a 2+ year old system running a regular athlon XP that has a temperature based power cut off feature.

I <3 tom's hardware!

They were using athalon reg though, and palomino

That video above is my fav because I get to watch processors burn up!
