i have the trial version of fireworks and i really like it. unfortunately, it expires in 30 days. can anybody suggest a powerful free graphic editor? the bigger the better, but what i really need is something that allows me to do transparent backgrounds - the rest is just nice to have.

i use an online one, mainly because i can access it anywhere. http://stuff.mit.edu/tweb/form.html you just enter in the url of the gif image and enter in the color you would like to be made transparent. if its not a gif image than all you have to do is convert it. i like http://www.catenarysystems.com/demos/convert/convert.aspx online software is simplear and does exactly what i want it to do.

Gimp is seen by many people as superior to about anything out there. I've used it off and on over the last years, and I'm quite impressed. Here are a few links:

Official Site: www.gimp.org
Learn to use: http://tikal.bo.astro.it/GUM/Gimpmanual.html

For a windows solution, here's the simplest way to get started: http://www.gimp.org/windows/

Good luck!
