I'm building a site in Dreamweaver. It is being hosted by tripod.com. All the pictures and .gifs are very small but on a 56k modem it takes forever for the pages to load. I drug one picture off that is 12K and when I checked the size it was something crazy like 148K. The original is only 12K though. I'm perplexed! Can anyone help? The site is www.smokeshifters.com if you want to see what I mean. I have been teaching myself the whole internet thing so it might be something stupid I just don't know.
Thanks for the help!

Your page is over 450KB. This would take quite awhile to load at dial-up speeds.

Your animated gif logo is 181KB. Your gif named "ray..." is another 168KB. There's 349KB right there. Add in other images and your roll over images, and you have a massive load time for 56K users.

Your scaner is definitely screwed, man. It appears to me that you scanned those images. You need a .jpg cruching program bad. ;)

I have a lot of the files small but I'll go through and see what I missed and try to downsize anything I can. Thanks for the advice. If anyone else has an opinion please let me know.
thanks again!

Its not necessarily you eather. Tripod puts a lot of java script into that add code. That probably has a hand in why your page lags so much when it is not cached.

Oops never mind. Ignore my last post. I didn't realise you paid for the plan, I was just speaking out of experience that when host put ads on your page it makes them lag.

I used angelfire before brinkster and I would assume its a carbon copy of tripod almost, thats what I hear atleast. But brinkster is pretty good if you like asp or asp.net, lycos is good for php and there are dozens of other good low priced/free hosts out there. Look at the banner add at the bottum of this page lol.

If you pay for the site, I suggest one of the following: netfirms.com, ipowerwebhosting.com, ehosting.com. They seem* to be reliable hosts, and netfirms.com hosts for $5/mo.
