what is xml?

hi ive heard it mentioned loads but cannot find out what it is please could someone tell me what xml is?

XML, eXtensible Markup Language, is simply a structured way to markup data.

If you know HTML, then you'll understand the basic concept immediately, though you may not understand the usefulness. The usefulness is in that we can create an unlimited number of transport mechanisms for data, in a well defined almost universally accepted medium.
