My computer randomly freezes

Can anyone help me determine why my computer randomly freezes, and what I can do to fix it? I bought a new laptop in the middle of November, and for at least the past couple of weeks I will occasionally move the mouse and have the computer just completely freeze. Why is it doing this? Heck, my million-year-old clunky desktop doesn't freeze as often.

My computer:

Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)

There are thousands of reasons why a pc might freeze. When it freezes are you doing something, is something writing to the hard drive? When it freezes, what is your proc and ram usage like (you can check this by going to task manager through ctrl alt del and clicking the perfromance tab). Have you tried running any spyware removal programs yet? How much ram do you have, and what kind of processor do you have?
