I hired somebody a while back to create a site for me.

the site is: http://www.collectorplanet.com/forum

I have been told a few times that i am running an outdated board and that it is critical for me to upgrade.

The problem is that i may not know how to.

Where do i go?

What about all the modifications the site has, like "Points" (members can earn, share or buy stuff with points), or the "Shop/Store" .... will anything happen to those files with the upgrade?

I don't have any members/posts yet so i am not worried about that, but what if i did have members and posts?

Any help is appreciated, please point me in the right direction.

thanks,

That should be fine. If you are upgrading bb software your files (php files in this case) just get upgraded. All of your db info (your configuration and all of your members data and posts) should not be effected. I would just save a copy of any config files. I have never used phpbb myself so I do not know about any of its settings.

Also you hired a person to make what you currently linked? How much did you pay?

I paid $100, basically for him to set up the points system and shop, add the banner rotator and set up the board.

I still need to hire somebody else to finish the rest but i try to figure it out myself first.

I still need to know how to upgrade the php files though. I thought maybe he used the phpbb bulletin board that comes with the cpanel but it does not show an installation, it does however show the upgrade.

What happens if i try to install that phpbb board? onto /forum which is where this board is currently installed?

Thanks for the help.

I do not use this particular board, but I would be willing to bet you can just overwrite the existing files and not damage your configuration or your db. But you might want to make a backup of the existing data.
