Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Annoying 'beep'
I started to notice two days ago that my computer performs a faint 'beep' sound when I maximize / minimize windows, I'm not sure if its been going on longer. Although I don't think that it's a very serious problem - it's damn annoying.
Does anyone have any idea what is causing it and how I can disable it?

Is the beep coming from the motherboard speaker (a sound coming from within the tower) or from your speakers?
It's coming from within the tower - it's not the speakers or the normal error beep.

huh. That should not be happening. uhhhhhmmm got a knoppix cd handy for an experiment? I want to know if the same things happen from knoppix (linux that runs completely off of a cd).
I havn't got a copy handy but I will find one and try it for you.
It only seems to happen when I connect to the net.

This is happening to all clicks of the mouse when you are connected to the net? I am trying to figure out why one peice of software would affect hardware like the motherboard speaker.
It only happens when I maximize or minimize an application window.

I can honestly say I have never heard of this happening before, one thing I have noticed though is that sometimes normal speakers will make a little sound when windows a minimized or maximized if you have a low end sound card or are running onboard sound or something.
It seems to only start beeping after I log into MSN Messenger...
Still experiencing this damn annoying problem.

go to the windows control panel and click "sounds and devices"
click the "sounds" tab
scroll down to "minimize" change the selection for the sound to play to "none"

Every time I minimize or max. window, I get the same beep... It is not from my internal speaker, but from the external speakers. Also, I get a scratchy sound when scrolling using my mouse-wheel. You have to turn the speakers up quite a bit to hear it, but you can definately hear it.
My control panels sounds are not active to do such a sound either.
Anyone out there that know how to do this?

You could try this, but no guarantees:

These systembeeps mostly occur when there is some kind of shortcircuitting on the motherboard.
it's mostly caused by dirt/fibers creating a shortcircuit and when the system tries to communicate through that spot it creates a conflict.
that shortcircuit can also be created when some programs occupies a system-channel
The motherboard kinda says " I prevented a disaster"
some times it find an alternative way to handle a command but warns anyway, some it can cannot. If it is fatal the system crashes. When worst the computer can set on fire.
First you could try to clean your computer inside by vacuuming. alternatively blowing.
but do no try to wipe it clean. It mostly leaves even more dirt in the computer.
where it comes to the speakers: it might be time to by a new pair.

Pappi,
Did anyone ever come up with a solution to your beep problem? I have the same problem and have been searching for a solution for quite a while with no luck. The beep does not occur when I start in safe mode. Changing the video driver and/or size/density doesn't seem to have any effect on it either.
Thanks...

From a search, I found your posts, and also have the same problem - did anyone find out what would be causing this, and how it could be taken care of?

Wow, this really is a complicated issue.... The only time I've ever heard the motherboard speaker beep is when I set it to beep when the caps lock went on or off on the family computer (it's still like that; it's a handy feature).
Anyway, the first thing I'd do is just do a live chat with the computer's manufacturer- assuming it's HP or Dell. I don't know about any other manufacturer, but I know that those two do live chats online. I always go to HP chat first whenever something's up with my laptop.
Chances are they'll probably tell you to update your sound driver, or other drivers. That'll may solve the issue, but it's probably some Windows setting that got fouled up sometime.... Even if you don't solve the issue, it's good to have up-to-date drivers, right? ;)
I hope they can help you. I am pretty mystified about this....

Hi,
The beep, very faint, comes from the speakers and is not a motherboard (BIOS error) beep - this I am sure of. Someone else also had the same problem in an earlier post.
The beep happens when I maximize or minimize a window - never happened before!
Rgds.,
