Wireless Broadband

I have broadband downstairs connected to my PC. I want to move my PC upstairs. is there anything i can buy that will allow me to have wireless broadband meaning i wouldnt have to change were the broadband is installed and allows me to move my pc/laptop

You can get a wireless broandband router, no? I use a Linksys Wireless-G Router. You hook up the modem to the router, and the router distributes internet access to computers on the network.

I have a dlink wireless router. I would not suggest wireless though, just because it creates its own problems, some wirless phones may interfear, signal strengh may get weak, there are all sorts of issues. Also if you use wireless I suggest using some light weight encryption (you can set that in the router config), that is just so your neighbor can get on your network and download child porn or whatever and get you in trouble because the feds saw a bunch of child porn goin to your ip, or pirated software, movies, whatever. Wireless routers are fairly cheap, but a wireless network card might run you around 80 bucks.

Go wireless... I'm not a talented techie (as a search on this forum will prove), but I love my wireless network.

They were a doddle to set up and all work fine. Advice I heard though: try to ensure you use products from the same manufactuer as they're likely to work more effectively together (although that shouldn't be the case).

The only reason I have not switcted to a wireless router is because they don't give the same amount of speed as a wire full router does.

For full commercial uses, there is no difference, even for a B. My upstairs computer recieves an amazing, almost perfect 100mb/s speed. Download times are usually 300k to 400k from download.com . I have Belikin 2.4 Ghz 802.11b Wireless Router.

Why not wireless? It's very easy, one can move around without thinking about it. I've got four computers using my home network, and I can transfer between computers at about 50mbs. At 802.11g I don't have much if any interferance at the frequency being run, I use encryption, never any issues. I'm very happy, and no wires.

The problem with 2.4 is that most handheld wireless devices run on this frequency (such as phones or xbox controllers) and if you have the router near one of these devices when they're on and transmitting data (let's say for example the phone goes off) then your wireless connection get's messed up momentarily and will sometimes need to be 'repaired'.

I have a 2.4 wireless router and while 'repairing' the connection isn't the end of the world, I eventually moved my wireless phones downstairs (the router is upstairs) and bought a regular phone for my room because it became increasingly annoying with every call.

Wireless is great, especially for laptops and other portable devices, you just have to make sure it's secure, and doesn't encounter too much interference.
