I have been asked to design a database for a client. What they want is a database to enter personal info and then print out graphs and statistics on that info.
I have built web based databases using php and mySQL before, but this is not a web based application. It has been suggested that I used Access 2000 to make the program, but I am not familiar with access and wanted another opinion. Any suggestions?

I'd see no reason why not to use PHP and mySQL. Seems to me that you might as well just stick with what you know...

From what I read here, PHP and MySQL are not what is needed. It appears that the client wants an Access application... with DB, Reports, Charts, Forms, Queries, and all of the other features that this all-in-one app provides.

Maybe you can convince them to have you develop a web-based app that can run on their intranet for them.... but this sounds like a request for a network-based Access app.

Apples and oranges.
Better check with the client. Sounds like maybe they are a Microsoft-shop (and that's where their skill-sets would lead them).

Maybe this isn't what you wanted to hear... but the client pays the freight.
And as a side-bar issue: I wouldn't consider learning Access devlopment just for the odd-job like this one. The learning-curve can be steep with Access development, and you already have web-based skills that compare. But you asked for opinions... and that one was mine (wink).

no shortage of opinions or nightmares of Access development issues...

If you need to make an actual web app, then there is a program called Astromark (www.astromark.com) that is really easy to use. It supports many types of db files, so you can use an existing db if necessary.

What tools (compilers/DBMSs) do you/they have available for use in this project?

Just to be clear, your project is designing an entire database application, correct? Not just the database at the core of the database application?
